Instigator is someone whom starts fights or causes fights by instigating in such a way that two people become increasingly angry with each other to the point of fighting.

The OP used some simple word-play to make the joke, as "gator" is short for alligator, and he took insti from instigator, and replaced the second "i" with an "a" then added gator. Thus using some simple word-play to make the joke.
