They literally only help early game, Masteries (in my mind) are much better for alot of them take effect throughout the game. But runes are just Crutches that are like "hey lets make it easier for you until you can walk on your own"

I mean early game? yes, but mid to late it has little to no effect on you. Runes are basically there to give you a boost in in early laning. It either helps stay alive better or get a kill quicker, but they make runes and pages so pricey that you will have a basic AD and AP or a special one until you have enough champs or feel like spending money on it. I Have two and if I ever got a third it would be for a champ, but still masteriers are so much better.
