I always consider up-voting or down-voting to be a measurement of whether or not I agree with the post. To the opposite of your stance, I never downvote a post simply because it is not written well.
I consider up-voting and down-voting to simply be a popularity contest. Want to see more posts like a certain post? Up-vote it. Want to see fewer posts like it? Down-vote it.
Want to see a well though out, well articulated post even though you disagree with it, because you think it's worthwhile for others to read it? Up-vote it.
