She actually used to be a really strong AP Mid. I have a buddy Ranked with her Mid all the time.
To say that she was designed as such though is a different story..

Sona can't hear so her speech is kinda of iffy Assassin= Burst Mage :^)
I've found Sona to be a powerful mid-laner. I once wanted support in Ranked (I main support) but it was taken. My team told me to go Sona mid and build full AP. I was against a Xerath. My hands were shaking the entire time but we eventually won and I said something to the effect of, "Well I'll be damned! Sona DOES work as a mid-lane mage!"
