Sona Is totally a utility assassin, just like how Vladimir is an ad-carry specializing in dueling or Bard is a mage made for splitpushing.

Sona can stun you, kill you, then run away. Vladimir has unparalleled lifesteal synergy among ranged champions. Bard is about as slippery as Janna or Lulu and can apply each meep to the entire minions wave.

Going full AP Sona still doesn't make her an assassin. Champions like Le Blanc, Kha'zix, Katarina, and Rengar are labeled as an assassin because they are extremely agile and mobile (flashing around, stealthy, sneaky).

If the definition of assassin is high damage and mobility, then no, she's not an assassin at all. But, if the definition of assassin is to kill a person in less than a few seconds, full AP sona is definitely an assassin.

An ap character with low mobility and the ability to 100/0 someone in a few seconds is called a burst mage. An assassin is a high mobility champion that can 100/0 someone with (Usually) high risk to themselves. Veigar is a burst mage. Rengar is an assassin.

I'm a Sona player and I wouldn't label Sona as an assassin either. Any burst mage can take out another champion in under a few seconds.

She actually used to be a really strong AP Mid. I have a buddy Ranked with her Mid all the time.

To say that she was designed as such though is a different story..

I've found Sona to be a powerful mid-laner. I once wanted support in Ranked (I main support) but it was taken. My team told me to go Sona mid and build full AP. I was against a Xerath. My hands were shaking the entire time but we eventually won and I said something to the effect of, "Well I'll be damned! Sona DOES work as a mid-lane mage!"
