Newfound Appreciation for RIOT
I am a huge Touhou fan, and I love seeing all the little references to Touhou games. LIke Youmu's Ghostblade being a nod to Youmu Konpaku, Wriggle's Lantern referring to Wriggle Nightbug, Lux's Final Spark being a near carbon copy of Marisa Kirisame's signature spell card, Love Sign "Master Spark" and it's more powerful incarnation, Magicannon "Final Spark." And by all means it was just as powerful. But recently I learned of a much less known Touhou nod. Do you guys remember the concept for the champion Komachi? Well, it just so happens that Komachi is a Touhou character.
Let's break this down.
First off, the champ was a sort of grim reaper with a scythe for attacking. The Touhou character is a Sanzu River ferrywoman. The Sanzu River in Japanese mythology is basically the River Styx, but crossing it was the last step to being judged to be sent to Heaven or Hell.
Second, the campion had an ability that would have her and a struck enemy swap places. This is very similar to her attack in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody called Ritual of Ecstacy, where she and her opponent would switch places.
Next up, the champion had an ability that could give her allies in an area buffs. This is like the opposite of another attack Komachi has in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody called "Narrow Confines of Avici." In this attack, Komachi creates a pillar of light that greatly slows down her enemy.
It's quite the obvious subtle reference, eh?
