Throughout the history of france and the creation of france, they were actually pretty intense and were almost eager to fight it seemed, and they won a ton too...

But them being cowards makes for better memes, so that's what people enjoy thinking.

I thought that was Russia? Especially since parts of the French military kept on fighting(at least until they got evacuated along with the British.)

Germany never even reached the Russian capital, they got destroyed in a winter invasion into Russia. The French leadership surrendered to a smaller German army after only putting up a 6 week long fight, which is why they get the reputation for cowardice.

And even then, that was only because they realized they were going to lose anyways, since Germans were actually a much stronger force. 10 people vs one sounds pretty easy win, until that one guy is in a tank. But the WWII propaganda going on would indeed make it seem like any incident of surrendering to the Germans was a prime example of cowardice, since the stigma all around the world was to fight them no matter what. Not the French's fault they valued their soldiers lives before they lost the battle.
