Second of all, look, I'm sorry, but I'm super nitpicky when it comes to this stuff. 42 isn't the meaning of life, it's the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Nobody knows for sure what the question is.
In the book, I think they discovered that the question to life, the universe, and everything, was 6 times 9. They concluded that the universe just doesn't make sense.
