This applies to a rock, released from rest or not directly thrown downward, whatever the case may be, which will try to remain in its path (either floating in mid air or flying off into space over the horizon) despite gravity pulling it downward. We know that it will never win here on Earth, but just because it's destined to fail, doesn't mean it won't try. (Kinda like
