Funny enough a lot of the problems in Norse mythology was also Odin's fault. Seeing as in the traditional mythology Odin had the ability to tell of powerful events in the future, he would always try to prevent it but in the process accidentally be the thing that starts it all. Like Ragnarok and the death of the gods. Surt was harmed greatly yet shown mercy in the end in hopes that he wouldn't seek revenge (hint: he still wanted revenge), and Fenrir/Fenris was tricked into being chained up, which only made him furious at the gods and was the sole reason he wanted them dead. So when he became free, he went and immediately killed Odin and a few others.
