Tbh I play certain supports because I like protecting my allies and feeling pretty (and sometimes buff when I play Braum).
You can argue paternal instincts there (oh yes definitely I relate to those). The feeling pretty part is just fantasy.
People like playing characters they relate to, but they also enjoy a decent fantasy. Well, not all people, but I digress.
