Let's build our village at the base of a mountain or plateau or whatever you want to call it that has a cool altar on top of it.
Let's keep the key to this altar down 4 miles of steps, instead of storing it at the top near the altar with a guard.
In case of invasion, let's all let the old guy take the stone key thing to the top by himself and everyone else stand a the bottom of the stairs where they can easily be surrounded.
And on top of having the Fire nation attack, this poor village has their special rock stolen! The thief wasn't even fighting for it, he just kinda ran in and took it in the chaos!
