[Guide] Passive Utility focused Sona guides/ Suggestions

Hello Mushkai here!

So here is the thing. I enjoy playing league but the high stakes nature of it makes me try too hard to consider it casual (unless I play in ARAM). That said I do wish to play better consistently enough to consider playing ranked more regularly. Which brings me to put up this post.

I joined League a little before 06/11/2014, trying out mages and marksmen mostly. Few days later I played we need a support and Sona was in the rotation. I bought her Arcade skin the 18th. Despite being on and off, I really enjoy playing Sona and personally it's one of the champs I do best at (only champ with lvl 7 mastery; yes I don't play that often). However I play her in a passive, utility focused. I keep my eyes on my mana and passive count to be ready for the P+E Slow or P+W damage reduction while using P+Q seldomly. I would appreciate of anyone could take some time to send some links to guides, or type them here, that help me make the most out of a passive/utility playstyle. I know poke Sona is strong but I have a utility/support mindset; I'll opt into helping my teammate get a kill rather than being bloodthirsty, though I still get greedy sometimes >.<.

Anyhow that's it. Just want to improve on my strengths with Sona for ranked. Though, feel free to drop similar guides for Naut, Nami, Leona which aren't my best but still help me get my wins. Thanks

I don't have a guide to link, but I will say that I love playing Sona in a similar way. And although it's just my own preference/opinion, here's what I usually do.

Early game is really about trying to scale as quickly as possible for mid/late game, and Q is your best bet for early pressure. I usually grab 2 quick points in Q (Q,W,Q,E) and then focus on maxing my W from there out. From my own experience, this gives you enough pressure along with spellthief's to get through laning phase without delaying your mid/late game.

From there it's really about playing smart. Learn the situations where you are going to make a difference and don't waste time. Tear is kind of a must buy item, and the new Archangel's is amazing. Not to mention, sightstone is gone, so that's basically a free tear early. So trying to get that stacked and begin buying your heal/shield items is the early to mid game focus. This is what's nice about maxing W after 2 points in Q; your heal/shield is actually pretty potent at this point, and with tear, it doesn't break the mana bank too fast.

But yeah, the rest is as you put it. This build is about utility and having a strong W earlier, so play around it. I'm a sucker for Mikael's so I highly advocate mastering the cleanse, almost every game will have a good reason for buying it, and it can be game changing.

OH, and another note. A lot of times, especially the higher elo you go, spending a ton of time out of lane warding and roaming is seen as a preferable playstyle for supports. Your ult has amazing pick potential and warding is key, and you allow your ADC to get some much needed solo XP. While I'm not telling you to NOT roam, I am saying that experience is a really big deal for Sona, because of your ult passive. So it's like I said before, don't waste time, but I also should have said don't waste resources. You can usually hope to get to your level 11 spike in a game, and getting there feels really good, so make sure you're picking up XP wherever you can get it.

Just as a disclaimer (Yes, at the end of the post), I'm sorry for the giant wall of text lol, I tried to break it up. This is just my own style that I've developed and love playing. By no means is it the "Best" Build all the time. I think that varies from player to player, game to game, and case by case. Regardless, it's worked really well for me and for what it's worth, this is coming from Diamond ELO. From your post, it sounded pretty similar so I thought I'd share. Please challenge things and learn what works best for you, I love seeing people come up with different styles for Sona :)

Good luck! Sona
