IDK how viable top Sejuani is anymore after the W nerf, but every matchup I had as Sej v Riven was extremely easy when all you have to do is buy Sunfire.

Tahm might be the modern iteration of this, especially with the potential buffs.

I want to make a video detailing how many things work well against riven, but then her mains would just use that against us. I've got to agree with the others Ive seen about lately: Garen's q does not really get the job done. His E is unaffected by her stun, but he will still be stationary and she has the counter-mobility to outrun his Q and etc etc.

I recommend Maokai who's full combos are devastating and highly disorienting. He is capable of interrupting her broken wings (dash) chains (she has to keep dashing to get all 3). He can slow her 2+(RCS/Iceborn) ways while building offense and defense dual items as core. He also jukes her ult with ease by using W on her because the cast of the cone begins slightly away from her own hitbox allowing him to avoid it entirely in most cases.

And Chogath for similar reasons, but the most important thing about counters is learning how to outplay and indeed most the counterarguments I've seen for picks such as your Garen and Chogath are because Riven can counterplay them. Player strategies make games.

I played a draft game with some friends, and the first thing the enemy banned was Garen. Sure enough, the enemy first pick instalocks Riven, so I try to be creative and went with Swain top. I died once early to her, but never again. Even managed to kill her and pressure her out of lanes a couple of time. Good times. Until everyone else fed.

The difference between pros and high rated soloq players isn't mechanics. This is common knowledge. I mean hell, the most mechanically gifted players in this game aren't even pros. They stream and they elo boost for cash. (holla apdo)

the only reason huni got so ahead and was able to hardcarry is because fnatic gave him an over 700 gold advantage at the start of the game. good luck getting a soloqueue team to pull that shit off, where they don't laneswap, devote resources (intentionally at least), or hardpush lanes early.

Don't forget that Roccat sent Rumble bot and basically denied him xp/gold in order to secure the turret objective while Fnatic was doing their best to snowball Huni. It wasn't balanced at all.

OH? Cause the reason why riven can be so oppressive in soloq isn't because of her team giving her 500 gold advanatage before seeing her lanemate. She often harvests advantages on soloq players because of binarily favorable matchups on a sizeable majority of standard toplaners and just the games champion pool in general She can't be countered through itemization for most champions and most champions also simply lack the tools to beat her in a remotely simliar level of skill. Riven also has the ability to push and farm fairly safely, or at the very more safely than any other melee assassin and most bruisers, while also having a ton of completely free mobility and interuppt/cc (any assassin who has an even close level of cc has less reliable mobility) to facilitate roaming/ganking and being able to pop anyone who is a couple levels behind and not heavily defensively stated (read: junglers adcs and supports from early through late mid and even late she can still pop anyone who isn't a tank) It's mechanical.

Riven has been played like what? 4 or 5 (I think it's less than that unless someones been playing her more than i'm aware of in OPL) times in the top 4 pro leagues for the entirety of season 5? There is no resource to draw from on how i works in LCS which is the comparison you invited.

I'm not saying riven is unbeatable or that she has no counters. What I am truly saying is toplane, especially in soloq, got problems and riven is a fine example of a champion who exacerbates those problems.

When a champions biggest weakness is being a squishy melee champion and they also have the resources to close tons of distance while simultaneously avoiding lots of damage, and gaining a defensive steroid from the offensive stat they scale off of there had better be some good counter play in place. And sadly, pick chogath isn't counterplay. Not that I personally wouldn't feel comfortable first picking chogath top in just about every soloq game

You mean that match where each adc, supp and top went to the same lane just to get the turrets, but Riven gaining a 2 lvls advantage on Rumble just because they would let her finish the turret alone each time. And then he gets ganked by 3-2 people? I don't think that's called a "Laning phase" between the two.

Denying Riven early to mid game kills is one of the best ways to counter Riven. Freezing the lane and buying wards to counter any ganks will help as well.

The idea that you HAVE to fight riven to win is deeply lulsy. The more shit Riven has to use (without feeding her kills) to initiate trades the worse her trading potential is going to be. So yes, be passive, farm, force her to use her cooldowns on gap close/engage when she wants to trade, and punish her on the way in and out. Problem solved.
