Why is League of Legends Better than Heroes of the Storm?

011 : League of Legends vs Heroes of the Storm! | Game Design Zen

Is this the right forum? Last weekend, I was in Korea. And somehow, during a random lunch conversation, League of Legends came up. 6000 miles from home, LOL was still relevant. With two Koreans in the final championship match this weekend, it seems a perfect time to have our own contest - League of Legends vs Heroes of the Storm.

Blizzard versus Riot is a battle of titans. It's the AAA equivalent of Mechashark vs Megashark. So, let's start with some data. Of course, Blizzard doesn't release numbers. However, in a recent Activition/Blizzard press release, we could infer that between 10 - 20 M people may have registered to play Heroes of the Storm, at least once. Whereas, Riot has consistently said they have as many as 27M players every single day. This is a massive difference! And the question is, WHY?!

To share my experiences in Korea, what makes LoL great, and why LoL is better than HoTS, I released a new episode of the Game Design Zen Podcast. Enjoy.

PS - I'm betting on Korea this weekend - it's a guaranteed win :)

Why you gotta open up this can of worms OWO

Me personally in my humble opinion, I feel HotS is a better game than every other typical moba/tower defense including league but i still prefer league

Don't hate me, but I like Smite. Makes the whole MOBA thing and makes it unique by having a third-person view. In terms of being better? I don't think it is better than LoL, but it does make an interesting twist that could be enjoyable.

The third person view is a cool spice to the typical formula mobas, yea. Dota has a third person camera as well, but it was implemented solely to look at your own cosmetics. Would be nice if they opted to tweak it a bit to make it usable in general at some point in time.

I can't do Dota. It's too weird for me coming from LoL, so I decided to stick with what I knew and dropped Dota. With Smite being on the Xbone, which I own, I can enjoy that there. I don't imagine the normal over-the-top MOBAs being brought to consoles, but for such a thing as Smite, with it's third-person view, feels like it would have been easy to port.

Why not people play Strategy games on the Console

Most console games are bro games. You know, the ones you tend to play with friends over. Because of that, less AAA games are being serious, single player games with some multiplayer things.

Are you keeping an eye on Overwatch then? I have high hopes for that, myself. At first I thought it was just another typical fps, just with a nice looking polish, but it has some moba-esque additions to the gameplay and characters. Honestly i think it will end up being huge. ESL will CERTAINLY jump all over it lol

I'd love to keep a closer eye on Overwatch, but with my time being split between several games and my life, I can't always catch everything. Still, I wish I made the closed beta, would play the hell out of Overwatch.
