Confused about the Ranking system

I just finished my first ten ranked games. I lost 8 and won 2. For some reason I was put in silver v. I was completely expecting to be placed in bronze v. Does anyone have any Idea why I would be place so much higher that expected. I know MMR has something to do with it, but I have no idea how it work. By the way, all my ranked games were solo queue.

I don't think it's possible to get placed into Bronze 5 for your first time placements.

The baseline MMR is somewhere in Silver, so first time Rankers begin with an ok MMR that their placements will affect. For people that have placed in Ranked in a previous season they will already have MMR, but some of them trash theirs so the next season they place lower than a brand new player can.

Since you've placed for this season now, next season your placement will begin at whatever you get it to (so try to raise it up so you don't get placed in Bronze). Everyone loses some MMR in a "soft reset" with a new season if they ranked previously, so if you stay with Silver V MMR you'll probably place in mid-high Bronze next time. You'll be able to raise your MMR during the preseason if you want (the time between this season's end and the beginning of next).

First ever ranked games the highest you can be placed is s1 but your starting mmr is somewhere around 1200. From there you go up and down so unless you lose a lot of your games you won't be b5.

Now when the season restarts they usually do a soft reset, aka adjust your mmr by X amount, and you start there and your placements fluctuate per win/lose. It's very rare to be placed higher than you were the previous season since everyone usually starts tiers below their rank.

Thanks for the explanation!
