The Tale of the Two-tailed Squirrel
Deep in the forest, Lulu opened her eyes. She yawned as she stood up, stretching her two-feet tall frame. Lulu bent over to pick up her staff and don her red witch’s cap. Lulu was particularly proud of her pointy hat, which she thought contrasted nicely with her flowing purple hair. After picking up her few belongings, she looked around. “Let’s go!” A pink faerie squeaked as it dashed between her legs. “There you are, Pix,” Lulu responded with a smile. Pix fluttered up and settled on Lulu’s hat. Lulu spotted a pale two-tailed squirrel munching on a nut, and she skipped over to pet it. As she reached out, the squirrel jumped away from her and ran out of sight. Lulu took off after it, thinking that the squirrel wanted to play tag. “Game on!” she exclaimed as she rushed past the ancient trees. Lulu had just about reached the squirrel when she tripped on a root and tumbled through a bush into a small clearing. “Whoa…” she groaned, “dizzy.” She regained her balance and looked about her. Around the clearing, hundreds of colorful cupcakes adorned the trees and bushes. Lulu’s eyes widened as she turned in a circle, but she was interrupted by a small mew for help. She turned and saw Pix stuck upside down in the bush she passed through, and rushed over to aid him. Once Pix was untangled, they wandered around the clearing, inspecting the cupcakes. Her eyes alighted on a yellow cupcake with white frosting and a cherry on top. This cupcake seemed to call out to Lulu, and she was unable to resist the urge to eat it. She picked up the cupcake and just as she was about to take a bite, Pix slapped her face, frantically trying to wake her up from the trance. Lulu was unfazed, however, and sank her teeth into the creamy goodness. There was a pause as she savored the sweet delicacy, while Pix waited anxiously for something to happen. “Yep, that tasted purple.” Lulu remarked, breaking the silence. Pix stared in confusion and then decided that he would try one also. Lulu finished the cupcake and reached for another, when she noticed two glowing green eyes staring back at her from within the bush. “Nosey dewdrop,” Lulu sang as she leaned closer. Suddenly the eyes vanished and Lulu took a step back in surprise. “Pix?” she cautiously questioned from across the clearing. Pix looked up from his cupcake. With her head over her shoulder, Lulu took a few more steps back. The bush shook, like a dog shaking off water, and a horrible creature leaped from the bush. Lulu stared in horror as the hideous purple creature flew out of the bush. The alien creature resembled a strange insect as it hurtled towards her. Lulu snapped out of her shock and yelled for Pix. “Help!” she called. Pix blinked out of sight for a split second and then reappeared at Lulu’s side. When the creature was only inches away from Lulu, Pix raised his tiny arms and a thin stream of magic flowed out, quickly forming a bubble around Lulu. The creature’s pincers bounced off the bright shield, and it hissed “Khaaaaaaa-ziiiiiiiix”. “Kha’zix?” Lulu muttered to herself. After catching her breath, she wondered how she was going to get out of the situation. She desperately searched for a solution, while the shield faded more and more each time Kha'zix hit it. Lulu glanced at Pix and noticed that he was pale from the energy drain while maintaining the shield. Lulu had a sudden idea and quickly stuck Pix in a small pocket sewn into her hat. She lifted her staff and, drawing on her inner power, shot a burst of liquid glitter into Kha’zix’s eyes. As the substance traveled through the shield, the shield dissipated, and Pix collapsed from the effort. Kha’zix clawed at his face, and Lulu seized the opportunity to flee. She ran away, and taking no chances, she pointed her staff in front of her and held tight. Her staff shot forward, taking her with it, and she stole a glance back. She was shocked to see that Kha’zix was no longer in the clearing. Pouring as much power as she could into her staff, she sped through the forest, trying to get as far away as possible. Exhausted by now, with her fear slowly diminishing, Lulu pulled back on her staff and collapsed to the ground. Kha’zix appeared out of nowhere and lunged through the space that she would have occupied had she not stopped. Kha’zix turned around and crept towards his weakened prey. Lulu closed her eyes and mentally retreated within herself, gathering every last drop of power left in her. Kha’zix stood over her, venom dripping from its fangs onto her dress. Lulu opened her eyes and released all she had into a formidable scream. A visible shockwave of raw energy erupted from her body, knocking Kha’zix over. Lulu’s body seemed to triple in size, and the shockwave traveled unimpeded farther into the forest. Animals for miles around buried their heads in order to escape the awesome power of Lulu’s scream. Blackness crept in from the edges of Lulu’s vision, and she saw Pix crawl slowly out of her hat and sit by her face. She saw Kha’zix stir a few meters away, and she put her hand on Pix’s head to draw on his power. Just before blacking out, she whispered, “Transmogulate.” Lulu’s eyes closed, and Pix turned his head to follow the burst of magic which flew out and melded into the body of Kha’zix. He watched as Kha’zix’s body transformed, growing furry and shrinking in size, until it looked exactly like the two-tailed squirrel they saw earlier. The squirrel twitched, then got up and scurried away. Pix, satisfied that they were safe at last, settled down and slept in Lulu’s open hand.
