Champion Mastery Rework
Hello all,
I was thinking about what truly makes a game fun and reminisced to my younger days on what pulled me in to the gaming industry. Whether we are older or younger, we can't help but admit a certain pull to these fantasy games. Why? I believe it to be a form of self-replication within the game, and for me it started with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time being told I was the chosen one.
How does this affect League of Legends? Well, what makes people play ranked with the same champion over 400+ times instead of trying something different (another feel or whatever the meta recommends). Riot kind of addressed this with the S->D ranking and the champion mastery, but other than just looking after the game, how does this actually drive the player to play that champion more other than just earning the ranked 5 and moving on?
I think the system needs a rework.
I think Riot should literally attach a score based on a cumulative addition of the players combination of S+ to D- rankings. I believe a few fansites do something similar giving players a number. So what's the difference? Riot supports it and it's something the player can track.
The player no longer simply reaches rank 5 mastery and moves on to another champion just because. On the forums leagues incorporates a player ranking, similar to the list of people in challenger, of players with a certain champion. Instead of people only approaching the game with the uniform goal of ranking up, they now have a new goal to see if they can hit the Top X (500,1000, idk) with a certain champion.
Sadly, as gamers, we get really attached to these self-imposed wish-to-be images of ourselves (I love assassins like zed, talon, yasuo, etc).
I think this would give some practicality to the mastery system and allow the player to have more drive to play the game more (and invest more in leagues, i.e. Hey I'm a good with ______(insert champion), I should buy more skins).
Basically, what is your place in your region with that champion despite being silver or diamond?
Let me know what you guys think. It should be mentioned I don't expect other players to see the score of a summoner with that champion since that would incite a lot of drama, unless he or she looks up the summoner on the leagues forums.
