[Prologue] Age of the Watchers - The Beginning and the Ending
"It is time for a bedtime story!"
The girl shrugs for a moment, but knowing her grandma, she would not survive that battle against her.
"But I want to choose, grandma!"
"Ohh that is new, even for you! What kind of story do you want to hear?"
"Anything else than your common stories!"
"Well.. I guess you are indeed old enough for this story..."
Her grandmother stares at her hand in that moment.
"Where was I? Oh yes.. Long time ago, centuries ago before you or your mother was born, there was a time when people's wishes were to rule over Runeterra by force. Endless wars erected by those who were willingly to pay the lifes of their servants for a foolish dream of world conquer. There were four mighty forces who ruled over the world we live in now. One of them was the Watchers, ..."
The girl wonders and interrupts.
"You've told me the story of the Watchers over and over again, even if you change the beginning, I recognize it!"
"My dear, this is another story, believe me. The four fractions, including the Watchers, fought each other for greater land and territory, an endless war waged and not even time could heal the wounds and deaths caused by the malicious kings. Even though they fought to the bitter end, ironically they were siblings."
"How cruel! Why couldn't they live just in peace? I will never understand adults!"
"Well.. it is said that they made a contract which said that they split all four and each individual had to conquer nations and prove of their worth. Like childrens with toys, they played a game with human life. "
"I don't know why, but this story doesn't feel right. I mean, where are the heroes to fight back?"
"Oh dear, the truth it is.. the heroes of Runeterra couldn't do much against. Each of the four siblings mastered one element and created the very surroundings to their advantage. Like a flying fortress made of stone, a ice-cold and howling field of no return, vulcanos made to create unpassable terrain and thousand lightning strikes trapping every foe to his death. Ironically, the siblings fought each other, but they were also linked by their souls. One couldn't live without the other, because one's death meant the death of everyone."
"Let me guess... because there's no hero, one of the rulers realized the undoings and jumped right off a cliff and brought peace to Runeterra?"
"This would've been the best way... but unfortunately..."
The young girl astonished by the seriousness of her grandma, continues to listen.
"One of the siblings - the youngest - walked day by day to a well in his garden to spent his private time. He always whispered and wished himself to be stronger than his other siblings, who were controlling more and more of the youngest sibling's territory. One day, miraculously a voice replied from the well and asked the young ruler if he wanted to sacrifice everything for his dearest wish, the young ruler was surprised, but then immediately answered to sacrifice everything. He wanted true power! The mysterious person agreed and the voice disappeared, only to return in the next days with the souls of his siblings imbued and imprisoned into a scepter. But the prize that the young ruler had to pay was his soul itself. For the person's own little game, the person imprisoned the young ruler in stasis - to then return when the time is nigh for his powers to show."
"What does this mean, grandma? Did he became the strongest person? Stronger than Braum!?"
"Haha, perhaps. But we will never know until the young ruler returns. But if he returns, this world might be his next target in his childrish game.. and he would bring a powerful toy along."
"I hope he finds someone who will love him as much as I love you, grandma!"
Her grandma smiles bright for her lovely and sweet angel.
"Maybe it wasn't a bad idea to tell you that story. It seems you grow older, but no matter your age - you'll be my sweetest and dearest child!"
And the story ends with a good night.
