I have 60 prestige points, and im feeling kinda bummed out because I can't do anything with them. I don't see why they need to expire, as not everyone wants any of the glorified chromas. It's just gonna feel like shite when its Feb 1st and it'll all be gone, they really need to change this.
It simply it a way to force whales to purchase chest to access prestige skins. Tell them that something is only available and only one way to get them, and just sit back and watch them throw all their money at the screen.

Same reason as "limited time" everything else. It's to try to force you into engaging with the purchasing options through Fear of Missing Out. It's to have you look to get something so your points do not "go to waste", just the same as with those discount points you've seen at dozens of department stores. You don't want to have your points expire so you go there and you'll spend more while you are at it. It keeps you from sitting on the points and saving them. That's the real reason that they expire.
Money.

Damm man go hop on smite lol they have so many 1 time only skins its ridiculous. If you dont wanna spend money on tokens and you dont wanna spend tokens than why is it a problem if they dissapear? I got 100 tokens and bought a skin and I have like 30ish left over. They are making it so you can trade them in. You also had all year knowing they would expire on a certian time so if you were working for some knowing a year and advance they would expire then it's kinda your fault

Why do frequent flier statuses expire? Or gas rewards statuses?
Because they’re based on your loyalty during a calendar year.
