Leona's Passive

I was thinking about Leona's theme and began to wonder how her passive fits.

After thinking about it, the passive does not really fit the idea of a shielding/protective vanguard.

Her passive Sunlight being a debuff that is activated when an allied champion attacks an afflicted enemy with the debuff causing the enemy to take bonus magic damage.

Theme aside what I actually hate about her passive is the fact that she cannot interact with it herself. It is hard to say that she is a strong independent champion when her passive is completely dependent on allies.

Would it not serve Leona and the game better if she had a passive that she could both make use of herself and help allies?

Here is my idea:

Leona's spells charge any enemy unit damaged with Sunlight for 3.5 seconds. When Leona or allied champions deal any damage to those targets they consume the Sunlight debuff reducing the target's damage by X% decaying over 2 seconds.

The damage reduction is not expected to be large perhaps 2% at level 1, 7% at level 18.

A change like this would help Leona live a little longer when she dives. Also this change would mean she would have a passive that helps keep her team alive other than by just killing the enemy.

Not a bad idea, but designed as a support for the meta, Leona's kit works perfectly as it is. I actually play a lot of Leona in mid lane and almost always win (probably because people aren't used to the matchup), but I don't see anyone making a relatively significant change to a champion's entire playstyle just to break a meta that already works. Personally I'd like to see it just to have one of my favorite champions dominate even harder, but as it is, Leona garners complaints and bans rather constantly.

I do like the idea though.
