Syndra W-E combo does not scatter mid air ball GAMEPLAY

I main Syndra but maybe I missed something in a patch note somewhere. I have found that sometimes I do the W-E combo and the E doesn't effect the ball. So either E's range is not as long as W (Which I think it isn't as long, but never seemed to effect it before) OR it is a bug. To me the E (Scatter The Weak) doesn't effect the Q(Dark Sphere) when it is in mid air from the W (Force Of Will). This was a specifically noted ability combo last year in one of the patches (kinda like "hey try this combo its really good")
I believe it only happens in bottom lane river area around dragon, any time during game. Side Note: I have changed to quick cast, maybe its to do with that?
