What is my friend playing?

My friend clearly is playing Nami, but what game mode is he playing? I've seen this constantly among friends and I get so frustrated. I've tried the usual reinstalling, making sure my ports are forwarded, etc, I've been around the block.

It even happens at a friends house, which is how I know it's not a localized issue.
