Able to launch game/queue for matches while missing a large patch

I recently queued for an unranked 5v5 on summoner's rift, but upon exiting the lobby and launching into the game I received a message stating my graphics card was not up to date with League of Legend's requirements and was unable to continue. After relaunching to try again I was stuck patching over 5GBs worth of content in the pregame menu and subsequently doomed my teammates :(.
