Choppy sound when using Airpods connected to a MacBook

Starting a game with Airpods connected to a MacBook causes the sound to play choppy. Disconnecting them doesn't solve it, you have to quit and reconnect. Could it be solved so it sounds correctly when using Airpods? Or at least dynamically change the audio source during a game?

Go to System Preferences -> Sound Then change the Input settings away from the AirPods. Then, to reset the Output settings, switch the channel away from AirPods and back again.

That works for me.
