Heyho,
You cannot resell an item after you receive the "Elixir of Skill" (quest reward of coin quest) while you are standing on the summonors platform. I had this problem while I was dead. Long story short, I got a gold coin from an assist then the resell button turned deactivated (gray). Very annoying if you buy an expensive item.

It makes sense to prevent people from upgrading it for then reward then refunding it instantly. Any item that you can make use of can't be sold after you use it. For example if you buy something on teemo and someone steps on a shroom you can't refund because it would cause abuse cases (Annie could sell all her items and buy a ton of flat AP when she dies so Tibbers is stronger, then refund back to normal afterwards)
So if you use an item you can't refund because there were abuse cases.
Nice catch. Don't think it could be abused anyhow. It shouldn't work that way
