Taliyah W consistently not activating

Taliyah has been my favourite champ for kit and character for personality since Gnar, and after her first buff I had a blast. Once you got the e > w combo down you would do extremely well (though for months people still called her shit even as I would outdamage Brand in a 50 minute long game and generally destroy the lane early, so it was fun to see how ignorant they were being). I was fine with activating the ability and then reactivating it to choose a direction. But since it was changed to clicking it once and moving your mouse, I find that my w almost never activates, which of course completely ruins her, taking away about half her damage potential and all of the potential escapes or saves I could have had. I don't know why it won't, I don't think the range is the problem because it happens when I try to kill or move people who are on top of me, but it's making Taliyah almost useless. When I'm at fountain and test it out it works fine but when I need to use it nothing happens 80% of the time.
