How does The LVL system work?

IDK how does the lvl system works cause when i play with my friend i relize that he lvls up fater then me and he is higher lvl. And then i looked at his acc and i saw that he needs 2880 xp to lvl up to lvl 82 and i need 3457 xp to lvl up to 71 i don't understand, he is higher lvl and needs less xp to lvl up?! Please someone help.
