Bard Ult & Assists

Is the bard ult configured to provide an assist on a successful kill if that's the only contact that you've had on a target?

A couple times last night in a team fight i would be low and ult to escape. My team would clean up, but i wouldn't receive credit for an assist.

I was curious if this was intentional or if something else was going on.
