Why not just make specialized items/runes only available for certain classes? That would make balancing so much easier.” We want League of Legends to be a game that is around for awhile. One of the biggest barriers for a game to survive is player boredom. When you talk to players who churn out of any game, including League, you hear things like “Everything started to feel the same.” League really starts to feel the same when you keep encountering the same champs with the same builds in the same lanes doing the same thing. Some amount of change over time, ideally driven by players, feels fresh and liberating.
So League has this long term need to support experimentation among players, but we have to balance that against the short term need of the game experience to be relatively healthy.
Players will get frustrated, and might even quit, if they feel like they keep encountering bullshit games, where a clever player figured out a unique build or position for a champion that has no real counterplay.
The clever player no doubt feels really good about their choices, but because they are trying out something that is rarely tried, the chance of it being unbalanced or frustrating is pretty high. When we nerf things like traditionally AD champions played in an AP build, it’s often because the high amount of burst from the AP build lacks a real response from the other side to deal with it. Now we could spend more of our dev time making sure those weird builds are healthy and fun, and we do try to devote that from time to time, but it’s hard to justify that at the expense of making sure something that gets played in a higher proportion of games is also relatively healthy and fun.
So the TLDR is that it’s the difference between short term and long term player needs.
Short term - I want to have fun in this particular game of LoL.
