Brand ult not bouncing

In the last few days I've been playing a good bit of brand. I've had 2 or more occurrences of using his ult and the skill is not bouncing like it should. In fact, its not bouncing at all.

One time on top lane, a mundo jungle came in at half health. I E, Q for the stun then W for dmg. he is really low and there is a minion near him so I ult for the finishing move. The ult hits him and disappears. He was just as clueless as I was.

The next, I was mid against anivia. I bursted her down to egg form. I start to dps the egg and again, have a minion near her so I ult for the finisher. I hit her directly and the ult disappeared.

I don't believe this to be correct behavior.
