Repeating Crossbow not passing to other teammates

Twice in the same game today, a unit died holding a Repeating Crossbow, and both times it did not pass to another unit on my team, it just disappeared.

I had 2 units with 3 items already so maybe it tried to jump to one of them and deleted itself, idk.
