Dragon buff reduce damage from Thornmail but not Dragon's claw

Why does dragon buff reduce damage returned from thornmail making it absolutely useless against shyvana auto attack and other dragon unit when they have the buff active but when i have dragon's claw(no image to link) the damage does not reduce against the thornmail i don't understand this logic
