0. Introduction

Greetings Summoners! Welcome to Firstblood’s official League of Legends Board page. The goal of this thread is to establish the team roster through applicants that are interested, and share similar goals. The following thread will be broken down into multiple parts. Please refer to the Table of Contents for specific information, but I encourage anyone that is really serious about applying to read the whole thread from top to bottom. I cannot emphasize enough that I believe it's very important for each team member to be on the same page. This goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyways, that I will not tolerate any spamming, advertising, or harassment of any kind on here.

This post gets updated almost daily, so please bookmark this page and revisit it to keep up to date as I add the infinite amount of things needed to make this post god-like. If you've read through the whole thing and are curious about any changes I've made you don't have to shift through the whole thread again to find them- you only need to look at #2 Updates and see where and what I changed/added. Lastly I'll be analyzing each player's tryouts performance objectively on here as well, so make sure to revisit this page a couple days after tryouts.

4. Team Information

The team’s general goal is to have 5 like-minded individuals work together and improve over time. I work night-shifts so I’m normally on my days (nights) off during the evening to past midnight hours. Since playing League of Legends doesn’t pay the bills I don’t see this changing for the time being, so I’m unfortunately only looking for people who play during these time frames, or can start playing during these time frames. I’m looking for players that have been playing for at least a year, but I will make exceptions for new players. We’re looking for players that genuinely love the competitive nature of a team game, and are looking for ways of improvement. Ranked isn’t too important, but it does help you stand out from other applicants, and measure individual mechanical skill. You are going to be required to play at a Platinum+ level, so please keep that in mind before applying. We will be using Curse Voice Chat. This will also be a mature team, so you must be at least 17 years of age or older. Under no circumstances will I tolerate any kind of harassment or abuse. It’s okay to have an ego, but you will not belittle others: including enemy teams we may face. Crude and sarcastic humor is bonus points, however ;). If you’re offered a position on the team- you’ll need to give me a way to contact you outside of the game (e.g. Facebook, cellphone, email, etc.)

NOTE: This team will not be participating in any tournaments until the short-term goals have been reached (see in next section). Nor do I have any visions of going professional. I'm not against the idea, but I'm also grounded to reality. If the opportunity presents itself and the stars align then I wouldn't object to it, but I want to make this very clear that this is NOT a Pipeline dream team. I personally enjoy playing competitively with Ranked 5's and just love the whole communication side to League of Legends. It enables a breathe of new life to the game. A completely different environment than playing Solo Queue.

5. Practice Information

We will be holding at least 2 practice sessions per week, this can range up to 4-5 practice sessions a week if the team is up to it. Per session we will play at least 5 Ranked games. We will be mainly focused on climbing the Ranked 5's ladder. The short-term goal for the team is to climb to high Gold/low Platinum. Once that's established we can start setting up scrimmages with other higher level teams using our Ranked 5's rating as a sort of resume. As I stated in the previous section I work night shifts. All of the practice times will be planned around the evening and midnight time frames. The practice schedule will alternate, so if we practice one weekend, the next weekend will be off. I’d personally love to have more practices but the nature of my schedule won’t allow it. If we get a solid starter-Marksman, or a sub-Marksman and the team is willing to we can change the practice schedule, and I would go into a more managing/coaching position or alternate between the sub.

6. Tryout Information

Once you've applied for a position, I should respond/reply within 24 hours of your post. To increase your chances you can always email me (that is the best way to get my attention.) Once you've agreed to a Tryout slot I've offered, or you've selected I will go about accepting them on a "first-come first-served" basis. [Example: If I offer two Supports a Monday tryout slot and they both agree- the one who agreed/confirmed first will take the slot and I'll re-contact the other to let them know it's been taken.] The tryout games will consist of 5 or more Ranked 5's games in a practice team. The whole tryout span can last between 4-6 hours. This will consist of a few small breaks, and a 30 minute intermission. The first game will be just like a solo queue game with pick/ban phase. In Games 2 and onward we will be establishing our pick/ban phase goals based on a specific team comp we’re going to play. After each game we will review everyone’s performance in an objective way, and constructively give criticism. We will rate our own performances and what we could have done better.

After tryouts I will be contacting ALL applicants via on this Board with information regarding their tryouts. I will address any pros and cons that stuck out, and additional comments and final thoughts. I will also let you know if you've made it to "Round 2" of tryouts. Round 2 will be almost identical to your initial tryouts, but please keep in mind I'll be looking for improvements (specifically anything related to communication in the Cons section). I don't expect these things to be changed over-night, but I do want to see the effort. Add “Firstblood” to the top of your application to show me you’re reading this entire post. :]

COACHES ONLY In the application process under "Role you're applying for:" Coach. Every coach must enter the "hidden" message in this thread at the top of their application form so I know they've read everything. If you fail to do this I will not contact you. For coaches that successfully do this and meet all parameters and requirements I will be contacting. We will have a brief interview in a Curse Voice chat (Voice-Comm.) It will not be typed/written interview. You don't need a webcam or anything, just your voice. Lastly, for the time being this is just a hobby. If you'd find this fun, and a way to improve yourself as a player of League or in other career paths than I highly recommend this.

SUBS ONLY In the application process under "Role you're applying for:" Sub (3 or more Roles you can sub in for). You must be able and willing to play at least 3 out of 5 roles to be a substitute. Substitutes only get a 3-game tryout. A substitute's role is to fill in for a roster members who are tardy or absent from a practice, tournament, or scrimmage.

8. Prerequisite

Since I’m trying to organize a well-rounded team there is some parameters that I will hold each player accountable for. I know this is probably the most controversial subject in this thread, and they’re not completely black and white, but a guideline of what my expectations are. If you have any questions as to why these specific requirements you can ask me in via #12 Contact Information, and or posting the question in the Application. These are the prerequisites required to join the team: • Age 17 or older. o Mature team, and mature atmosphere. • Ability to run the game at 60 FPS on maximum settings. o Able to see all ability castes and animations related to the game. • A headset microphone (I will not tolerate excessive background noises.) o Avoid echo-feedback, and excessive noises for clear communication. • A reliable internet connection. o Reasonable Ping with little to no packet-loss. • Over 1 year of playing League of Legends specifically. o Interested in veteran players. • Acquired at least 6 Rune Pages and all common runes for your role. o Needed for different Champions and specific match-ups. • Acquired at least 70 Champions, and have all Champions for your role. o Needed for champion pool diversity and trading during Champ Select.

9. Roles

Every role has differences and similarities, so this section will be explaining what’ll be expected of you. If you have any questions regarding this information please do not be shy, and ask! :]

  • Large amounts of knowledge on the game, strategies, team compositions, and other information about the game.
  • Veteran Player of League of Legends specifically for 3 or more years.
  • Platinum+ Ranking in at least 2 seasons of your League of Legends career.
  • Good people-skills and ability to problem-solve.
  • Able to participate during some of the team’s practices and be able to give live feedback after games.
  • Watch highlighted replay games and review them with the team.
  • Able to assist team on a group and individual level.
  • Able to assist individuals with learning new champions that fit the meta, or fit a team comp.
  • Be an active member of the team.
  • Review Team's Match Histories, statistics, and performances.
  • Review Individual's Match Histories, statistics, and performances (particularly regarding their role.)

  • Comfortable or willing to learn 1v2 match-ups.
  • Understands wave manipulation, when to trade in lane, calls for opponent’s base or MIA.
  • Understands how to allocate pressure on the map, and ward choke-points.
  • Able to farm efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate with Jungler.
  • Able to shot-call during high-pressure situations.
  • Able to prioritize Teleports for team-use during mid-late game.
  • Diverse champion pool you’re comfortable playing: Tanks, Bruisers, Assassins, Mages, and Utility.

  • Superb Map Awareness.
  • You’ll be the loudest person in the team- feeding information to your teammates.
  • Communicate next 3 Jungle paths (“I’m going to farm krugs, red, and raptures.”)
  • Communicate next Gank path (“I’m ganking bottom from enemies’ tri-brush.”)
  • Able to farm efficiently.
  • Understands how to ward inside enemies’ jungle: both deep and shallow.
  • Communicates where the enemy Jungler is, heading, or if we’re BLIND.
  • Able to communicate with laners.
  • Able to shot-call neutral objectives (Dragon, Baron, Red, and Blue).
  • Diverse champion pool you’re comfortable playing: Tanks, Bruisers, Assassins, Mages, and Utility.

  • Understands wave manipulation, when to trade in lane, calls for opponent’s base or MIA.
  • Understands how to allocate pressure on the map, and ward choke-points.

  • Chemistry with support, and understandings of power spikes in lane.

  • Keeps track of timers (Summoner Spells).
  • Able to Zone enemy Marksman.
  • Able to Anti-Zone enemy Support.
  • You wear the pants in the relationship. The laning phase is up to you, because you’re the carry in the laning phase. Don’t let any other Marksman tell you otherwise.
  • Don’t be afraid to secure kills. Supports that get kills actually make the Marksman’s job easier. More peels.

11. What I will be looking for

Attitude is the number one thing I will be grading applicants on. Ability to work with others, and good people/communication skills is a big one. Confidence in your own and your team’s abilities to win games. Able to win and lose games with grace. How often you’re communicating with the team. Performances in game: play-style, KDA, Kill Participation, Gold Per Minute, Farm, effectiveness, and other factors. Notice how I have in-game components listed at the bottom of this list.

I'm looking for people who can hold a conversation. I'm looking for people who love theory-crafting. I'm looking for people willing to learn Team strategies. I'm looking for people confident in their abilities. I'm looking for people who find Ranked 5's competitive nature fun.

Hello, Zentsuki.

Regarding your tryouts on Tuesday night:

Pros:

  • Absolute god tier on assassins.
  • Very good with communicating with the team.
  • Very high morale, and enthusiasm.
  • Conversation starter in between games regarding team/individual performance.
  • Mechanically grounded player, and able to perform in high-pressure situations.

Cons:

  • Good at calling engages (but not specific targets [shot-calling])
  • Champion diversity? (Didn't see much outside assassins)

The pros are absolutely staggering and you've out-done yourself to impress me. I'd like to offer a 2nd tryout for you if you're stil interested in the team. With regards to your Tryouts on Friday:

Pros:

  • Mechanically skilled player.
  • Efficient GPM.

Cons:

  • More focused on kills than objectives.
  • Greedy playstyle (Farming lanes taking Gold away from other roles).
  • Refusal or ignorance to follow shot-calling.
  • Did not communicate nearly enough during or in between games.
  • No Vision Control.

You have a really solid grasp at actions per minute, but that doesn't win games alone. It also can be at the cost of denying resources to another role. You never bought Sightstone on your Jungle builds, which is a big must in Ranked 5's. I shot-called several task for the team to do, and you would refuse or ignore the set-up involved into doing those tasks, and pursued less-optimal tasks, mostly on your own. You rarely communicated with the team, and would ignore questions the team asked you during games.

I'm very sorry, but you're not what I'm looking for in this team, and wish the best of luck to you.

Hello, ImDaBanana.

In regards to your questions: This team is going to be focused on improving, so semi-serious. It will be all about communication and open-discussion in between games/practices. I'm not against the idea of going pro, but as I've stated I'm very aware of the reality of it. This is by far THE most popular computer game, and there are only 50 people (not including subs, analysts, coaches, and owners) in each region that can be professional. For online tournaments we will be playing AFTER our short-term goals are reached. I've been on multiple teams that jumped into a tournament too soon, with high expectations for it to disband shortly after.

Your application is acceptable, but at the moment I do not have any tryouts scheduled. I'm still reviewing the data and and going to be scheduling Second Tryouts to this last weekends tryouts (for Support and Junglers). For the Sister Team I will not be scheduling tryouts for until the primary team has all rosters locked in. If you have any questions or concerns please ask.

A concern regarding your biggest weaknesses: How is "sharing kills too much" one of your greatest weaknesses?

At the moment I do not have any new tryouts scheduled. I'm still reviewing the last 4 tryout's data. I won't be hosting tryouts for the Sister Team until after the primary team is full. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by strict, but I'm more interested in a firm type of personality. I advocate open-discussions in between games, and we generally run the same composition 3-5 games in a row (or use similar champions that round out the comp.) I'm glad to see some initiative on building team comps and champion picks. Your biggest role will be to teach players individually and as a group; strategies, decision making, and mechanical feedback. We've faced several almost-all Diamond Teams, and only lost one game. It's a small sample size, but I'm confident in the team's overall ability to win games and have a positive mentality going forward.

Currently speaking, as my original post states, I have no future plans going professional. This, generally speaking, as of now is only a hobby, and I don't see this becoming anything more than that. Though I'm not against the idea of going professional, but playing this game for money is a real challenge let alone making a living off it. I'm very much grounded to reality, and I genuinely love the competitive, communication, and strategical side of Ranked 5's that Solo Queue, or an unorganized team, does not offer. I also find the game much more enjoyable I can not promise any form of payment, and the only legitimate way I see you getting paid is if the team can turn over a profit. Be it sponsors or tournament prize pools. I have no plans of making personal investments towards a coaches payment, and nor do I expect any team members make any contributions. I'm sorry if this isn't what you were looking for, but I have to make my earlier statements clear.

If you're still interested I'd be more than happy to interview you, and try you out as a coach. I'm next available this upcoming Monday and Tuesday, so if you are interested I'll be getting a hold of you then. True, but I'm not going to restructure my whole roster, myself included, to fit the potential coach's preferences. I asked for coaches looking to make it a hobby, and it's fine that you're asking for money, but I'm kindly rejecting the offer if that's the case. The only two scenarios I see you making money is if 1) we win tournament prizes (money), and 2) we get sponsored and have a more consistent cash flow. I do not like operating at a loss, and if the coach can't get the team in shape to win prizes and money, then the coach doesn't earn the money himself. This is a team effort, and hierarchy as far as finances go are deadlocked at even for the time being. So if we gross $0.00 as a team that's everyone's paycheck. (This is coming from a Libertarian Austrian Economics, lol)

also, i dont know what you mean by hierarchy but coaching five different people on the same team is a very complex matter and very very time-consuming even outside our regular training-schedule. this means its alot of work for the coach (you wont find a competent one who spends like 20 hours a week for free on your team. coaching is not the same "fun time" as playing, i tell you.) and for the coach to be able to do his work, his team has to "obey".

if i work out a strategy which i deem efficient, i dont want your midlaner to be like "nah i dont play those champions" or "i feel like playing zed this game". even if i would barely charge a pocket money and not professional fees, i'd still give you professional treatment and i expect my players to respect that and be disciplined. discipline is everything.

but since you are not willing to spend money on your hobby aside from buying skins, we sadly wont be able to work together. i woulda enjoyed that as you are one of the few team leaders i see potential in.

Regarding your hierarchy concern: It's also a lot of work for each individual because we have the tried-and-true method of execution. Not only do we have to learn different scenarios, but we have to know what's the most optimal way to act on them, and be able to execute it. Coaches push the team's conversation in the proper direction and making sure we're asking the correct questions. I used to coach players myself, and I'd use this example always: "Don't ask 'what do I do if enemy Riven is 6-0', but ask 'what can I do to avoid enemy Riven going 6-0.'" The workload would be split evenly for the most part. I make spreadsheets of all the team's data and I do a ton of other things related to this, but I do it because I enjoy it.

I would never force anyone to commit 20 hours+ a week with no pay. That's not what the coaches role would be- at least for this team at this time. I have no aspirations going professional, and only enjoy playing the game with the communication Ranked 5's has to offer. The coach would be more of a fine-tuner. I don't expect them to be present every game, because like you said it doesn't offer the same amount of fun, and I get that. I've already have an individual practice regiment in between sessions. If Mid lacked roaming capabilities, we'd have the Mid laner practice roams before the upcoming next weeks practice. That's just one of a million examples.

Like I stated earlier we do follow your "strategy guidelines" already as in we design a team composition; discuss our win condition, enemy win conditions, and adapted win conditions (according to enemy). I apologize if you got the wrong idea from the team, but I firmly disagree that a coach only has a 15% impact on coaching a team to success. It's a fair deal in my honest opinion, because you do gain from this as a player yourself. Regardless I wish the best for you.
