its because the pool of teams to pick from when in matchmaking is quite small.
It uses your solo queue MMR and your team MMR together.
So if you are in a group with 3 people and one is silver 1 is gold and 1 is plat The other team will mostly have a team comprised of the same skill, BUT.... IF YOU HAVE A FRESH TEAM WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF GAMES PLAYED, then you have a chance to go against high elo teams.
