How do the provisional matches work?

I recently completed my placement matches and won 5/10 games and preformed extremely well in almost all of them getting scores like 15/3/10 yet I was placed in bronze V. What confuses me even more is that the last time I did placements last season I was put in bronze II. I have improved greatly since then so why was I put even lower?

I am not saying I belong in Gold or that I expect to be magically moved up to a different rank, I just want someone to explain how I was put in this rank despite playing overall well.

Im not in ranked but my friends told me that you're usually placed relatively to the division you ended in in season 4. I think even with a good performance winning only half of your games will bring you down a lot. My friend won 7 of his 10 games but only stayed in the division he ended in last year, which was Bronze I.

(current ELO at the end of the season + 1200)/2 Your provisional effects your final elo. So Silvers are being placed in bronze. And Golds in silver. Although some people are gaining ranks.
