A third matchmaking system (suggestion)
As a D3 player, who mostly plays normals with my IRL friends (most of which are silver/gold), I think there needs to be changes done to the MMR system that's in place. So here's the issue with the system for me (and I'd like to think I'm not really a special case). There are two different MMRs for every player.
- Ranked MMR (which is shown)
- Normal MMR (which is hidden)
And that's good, there should be a differentiation between Normal and Ranked MMR, because you don't always want to take the game super seriously, and I personally think that winning should never be more important than having fun (at no one's expense).
So you may be thinking, Donger, you agree with the system, that's not an issue. The issue in my eyes, is that there should be a third MMR for each player.
- Scrim MMR (name subject to change)
And how I would have it set up, it would be identical to your Ranked MMR, but winning a game doesn't increase it, and losing a game doesn't decrease it. This is where you would go to practice for ranked or broaden your champion pool. Because as it stands, there's no really viable way for people in my situation to do that right now.
To clarify, this would differ from normals, I would personally suggest that duo queueing not be allowed in this, but having the same limitations as ranked would also be acceptable. I would suggest the same format as ranked, IE: Draft pick on SR or TT (if you want to have this mode for Aram/Dominion I see no harm in it however).
As with anything new, there are complications, and I understand that. One that comes to mind is that with everyone practicing new champions or what-not, it wouldn't truly be at your Ranked MMR, because people wouldn't be on their A-game due to playing a new-ish champion. I don't really see a way around this, perhaps someone else does however.
A side note, because for anyone that's not in a similar situation might not understand. My ranked MMR places me with people around Diamond 2-4. My normals MMR places me with a mixture of people from Plat~bronze/unranked. This is even when I'm queuing solo.
If you have any feedback or comments, I appreciate them all positive or negative. And out of curiosity I'm putting up a poll to see where the majority of people's MMRs lie relative to eachother.
TL;DR: A third MMR category for practicing seriously (and not just screwing around with friends) that doesn't risk your ranked MMR, this would be similar to a pro team's version of scrims.
