Will the new look, and new animations, possibly affect game play in a negative way?
Maybe, through glitches such as animations stopping, or just confusion?

Well they would want to perfect this as much as they can before an actual release. There is also the PBE which is a good source of feedback. They can gather the feedback they get and adjust.
Why would it? That is why it goes to PBE and they have testing.
