While I think it is well written and gives a lot of dept to the character (but only if some of his "good side" is kept after the Ascension) I still believe that Xerath should have kept the magic enthusiast archetype instead of the Jafaresque one.

Old Transformed Xerath's primary goal: Power and Power New Ascended Xerath's primary goal: Power (which obviously means Freedom too) and Ruling
I think New Xerath is more interesting and has more complex personality compare to old one.
I mean, he still carries will of man. %95 of humans would go crazy and try to rule humanity with that much power. Old Xerath was pretty boring with only power desire. He only wanted power to feed his ego, he was not going to do anything with this formidable, destructive magical skills, at least we are never going to know what he thought.

Old Ascended Xerath's primary goal: Break the seal imprisoning him.
Now, I really like the relationship between Azir and Xerath and I think that the moment of Xerath realizing Azir freed them all but the moment being too late for it (for what he has done to achieve it, for the ritual itself being also modified) and the last tears Xerath sheds for it. It is really a good story and adds dept to the characters. WHat I find a bit disappointing is that all of this could have been kept with him being closer to the former Xerath and not just a vile scheming consuelor and a black magic user.
I don't mind a dark side to a character, yet I find Aurelion Sol being closer to Xerath old self (one of the reasons I'm maining him).

We actually can't be sure about Old Human Xerath's primary goal. Both of us make sense. He may transformed himself for learning the nature of magic, but he also has the chance of power hungry. It is not clear in his short bio.
He wanted to free himself because of more power. He even made a plan and joined to League for his benefits, tried to steal power of Nexus to break seal. Breaking seal is goal, but not the primary one. It is a directly created goal that is result of primary one. Do I want more power? Yes. How can I have more? With breaking seal that limits me.
I think Riot made a mistake with only descripting black magic. I believe Xerath can also heal people if he desires, protect them with magic. In other say, he can also use magic for goodness of others. He is descripted as only a black magic user, but magic is not only about destruction. If he can cast most type of magic, it means he can also cast light magic.
I think Xerath can cast black magic, light magic, necromancy etc. I dont know but I feel like he is gifted with magic domination. He is skilled on most of magic. While mages like Taliyah are only related with one type of magic and how they probably can't cast any other magic types for the rest of their life, Xerath seems unique. At least as we know.

I believe after all this reaction, Riot can't have courage to show Xerath as overlord of evilness in next Shurima story. I think there will be a semi-redemption with a huge help for others. I really wanna see Xerath against Void.
