Where oh where has our lore gone?
The characters of league just... aren't as interesting as they used to be. While we may have some good personalities IN game, out of game is a whole different story. There are certain champs with pretty cool and in-depth lore backgrounds, such as the freljord tribes (ashe, sejuani. lissandra, etc). There are many more with a large POTENTIAL for lore. We know nearly nothing about a ridiculous amount of characters. What on earth is Bard protecting us from? What is Ekko aside from a time traveler? Does he travel time for people? What is the collective goal of the void champions? What is Aatrox? The list goes on. If you truly disagree with my assessment of the lore of the league, I would like you to just simply take a look at the base lore we see in the client for every champion released (or with a reworked lore) starting from the shurima event onwards. Especially the lore for one Rammus the Armordillo. "The mysteries that surround Rammus are numerous. How did a simple creature of the desert suddenly become able to reason? How did he craft his vaunted suit of armor? What is he searching for as he crosses the Shurima Desert? One thing is for certain: trying to stop the inexorable Rammus is a fool's mission." That is the lore Riot Games presents us with. If we go look at some older lore, such as the freljord lore, there is a legitimate storyline that involves a large portion of runeterra. Everyone from the freljord, and a portion of the Demacians fit together to make a story large enough to easily be made into a full length novel. Another great piece of lore by Riot Games was The Journal of Justice. Uncreative name aside, it was a really cool lore project that riot had going up until the beginning of s4. It’s the reason that Garen and Katarina are a pairing. It’s the reason that there are theories out there about how Le Blanc is currently impersonating Jarvan IV. It was simply a new publication of runeterra, that mostly described the struggles between and within Demacia and Noxus. Now let us take a look at one of the examples of a piece of lore that could be drastically expanded upon. Ekko. We know that he is a Zaunite prodigy who travels time, and that he is friends with the children of Zaun. That is his entire lore. There could be so many possibilities with this! We don’t know the full capabilities of his device, the Zero-Drive. Can it go decades into the past, or can it only restore time back from a fixed distance? (We can assume the latter from his gameplay, but Riot never says anything to prove it… again where my point lies) What has he done with the Zero-Drive? What WILL he do with it? Another total enigma of a champion is bard. Bard is a magical cosmic protector. Yup. That’s his whole lore. (Don’t believe me about the lore’s brevity? Go look it up yourself, along with any champion who has either been released or had a lore rework starting with Azir and the Shurima event.) For all we know, Bard could be the only reason the void hasn’t devoured Runeterra yet. But does Riot tell us what the heck Bard is or what he does? No. He just makes cute noises and hops around. There are other planes of existence that haven’t been explored yet as well. If we look in Taric’s lore, it simply says he was whisked away from his home by a summoning spell, and that there they practiced Gem magic. That’s it. Even certain older champs have no real lore to them whatsoever. I remember my first time logging onto league. It was during the Freljord event. For those of you reading this who were not present at the time of this lore culmination, I would like you to do a few things (If you have the time of course). The first one, go play a game on The Howling Abyss (even a custom game with no other players will do) and then stay for about one minute after you win. Just stick around and wait for Lissandra to start talking. Lissandra talks about how the freljord was hundreds, maybe even thousands of years ago. This part is pretty cool. Then go off onto the league wiki and look up “freljord.” Just read through the lore. Then go look at some of the issues of the Journal of Justice, especially the events surrounding the Kalamanda incident (that event in the lore is the reason that dominion and skarner exist). By this point you should have a pretty good feel for what Riot is capable of in their lore production. Unfortunately, Riot simply doesn’t give a damn about any of the cool lore stuff anymore except for champ teasers. Now onto the real point of this rant. I’d like to propose that the fan base of the league come together to write lore for Riot, because clearly Riot doesn’t care about having the world come alive anymore like they did in season 3. Maybe the fans can make the champions of league be interesting again. If you agree with me, just reply below! We CAN get the lore back on track.
,they also released the stories for
and
that were posted on the boards once.
However what became appearant was that the lore format changed a lot,as the bilgewater lores had a different style(a bio and a small story) than Azirs/xeraths(who were just a small story).
Later on they updated the lores of most shadow isles champs
and their next goals are the missing shurima lores(because they want to adjust them to the new style) and Mt.Targon lores(possibly meaning that there will be an event,a new champion or Taric might be retconned into being a targonian).
But keep in mind the full lores are on the main page, not in the client.
