Playing champions if I like their design / lore / character?

I don't like playing a champion just because "oooh it's op, i can win game with him / her" but because I like the lore / design / character / spells.

I was discussing this with one of my friends and I was told if he wins lot of games and strong with a champion then he enjoys it and the look of the champions, lore, character...etc doesn't matter.

Is it really that strange if I wanna improve and play only with champions whose lore, kit, design I like.

For example I like playing Lux . I like her overall design, I like her spells. And even if I still have very bad games with her sometimes, I want to improve with her and I don't want to start playing for example Talon just because he's considered op (at least in low elo where I'm currently).

The same goes for Ryze because I just love doing combos with him, and his lore is interesting I think. Not speaking of this blue design which is quite cool in my opinion.

I tried champions who are considered a noob, strong pick by many. But playing with for example Veigar was a pain. I just didn't feel his kit, I don't like his voice lines, and I'm not interested in his lore that much. (I even ended up feeding with Veigar )

Do whatever you think is right. Play the champions you enjoy playing. Unless you plan on going pro, fun is the most important aspect of the game. Also don't bother with what other people think about the champion you play. If somebody says noobchampion or stupid op-champ that's always just a boring excuse they come up with, to comfort their own fragile ego.

I am the exact same way, it's why I'm still sticking to Aatrox even if he's currently not so great outside of really high ranks.

It's not strange at all. Everyone have its favorite champions, and you're not forced to pick what's "OP" if you want to improve, you can improve with any champion you like for your own personal reasons. In low elo especially, which champion you pick doesn't matter, as the stats you'll find on any website are truer for the higher elo player.

Honestly? Those "op" champions don't tend to be near as strong as people claim they are.

Someone who knows their champion will almost always do better than a meta sheep or someone who picks a counter just because it's a counter.

I am the same, I just play champions I am actually interested in when it comes to lore and thematic.

Hence why I play every single Zaun and Piltover champion, since I love these regions.

I'll always stick to Maokai and Zilean, love playing champions that mildly inconvenience the enemy 24/7

I will always play Zoe, because her relationship between her, lux, and ezreal will always make me laugh

That's how I started to play this game. People convinced me that there was some interesting lore and characters and that's how it started and still to this day I play champions I like lore and theme-wise, especially my mains.

thats the only way i can keep playing a champion if i like the way they look, personality and general vibe. I ended up being a supp main cuz i didnt like the edgy mid laners and tops tbh Bard Ivern Braum

Thats how I choose my champs and how I chose my first one I wanted to play. I mainly play male champs because I prefer a male character too a female but I like different thematics from normal people to monsters thats what I like. I dont think you should and I even encourage you to not play the "Oh me so op hehe" champs because if you like the theme play the champ and Im not saying you'll crush every game but I find it more fun to play a champ I like compared to using that weeks most cheese and annoying champ just to win more games. No matter what you like league mostly has it which is what makes the game really nice because theres something for everyone

I do also play champions for their gameplay and thematic. One such (for myself that is) is Swain. I like his gameplay, character design, personality and voice. Even tho I tend to struggle playing him as of recent, since his early game is not the greatest, I still like him for that he is even with his weaknesses. There are few exceptions of course like Talon, I for the most part just play him for his fun gameplay, his character design, voice lines and personality are not that great, he could use some work on that aspect. But that doesn't mean I hate Talon, I'm just saying that those parts of him could be improved.

Rakan is one of my favorite champs so I spam him whenever I see a Xayah

It's pretty normal for players who just want to have fun. If you wanna climb ranked and be some pro player, you're gonna have to play champions that are strong/meta to some capacity, but if you're just a casual player who wants to have fun more than 'win', play who you like for whatever reason.

I'm a bit of a balance though, on one hand I wanna play champions I like the aesthetics and design of, but on the other hand I still wanna stick to champions I'm at least okay at. I'd play the hell out of Riven, LeBlanc and Elise if I were good at them; I love their design/character/aesthetics, but I'm just not good enough and don't wanna weigh my teammates down so I more often than not stick with other champions.

Really dislike the ones that are human edgelords who stole/was given their power without proportional effort. Aphelios If he's such an epic fighter, why does he need some epic ghost moon powers given to him? Worse, he has no personality. Sylas How did Sylas even learn to fight? Then goes toe-to-toe with Garen and Jarvan with chains, with power-stealing power as a side note when fighting. Kassadin Merchant gets mad, picks up vaguely cursed weapon, goes to void-town. No special training, no survival story, just that.

All the others are ex-human creatures (a bunch of undead, some magical creatures), or have always been magical creatures. But I really like the humans who are champions in their own right- Irelia, Garen, Darius, Ekko... etc. The other gifted power humans like Illaoi actually embody those powers or otherwise earned it like Kayn.

I am not lux main, but I would play her sometime if she had more lady like default skin ( Like light elementalist lux, but different.)

YuzukiSano2/16/2020, 9:11:11 PM1 votes

Same reason I picked up Sett . I guess I'm just a weeb. He happens to be meta cause new champ broken as always but even if they nerf him to ground I'm still gona play him from time to time just because I like him talking and just being his hot himself. It's not like I'm good with him anyway and I never played top before his release so I do get stomped regardless of him being op. I just love everything about him and let's be honest here, what girl could resist the way he looks at you in his splash art? (not me)

Also, Swain although I often hear he's good in low elo where I belong, he's not really meta. Kinda scared to pick him in rankeds even though I don't remember ever having a very bad game with him, cause overall his playstyle fits me perfectly. His lore's kinda cool and his personality... Yeah, I love it. I pick him in drafts if I see lack of ap or a somewhat favourable matchup botlane.

BackdoorPrincess2/17/2020, 12:35:45 PM1 votes

I genuinely enjoy Illaoi's gameplay, and think that it's a unique playstyle that isn't really seen (as most are either kite endlessly, charge in and murder, or mop up).

Also tentacles lul

Agreed, it’s why i main Ornn His overall theme, aesthetics, lore is what drew me to him.

Riot has been trying to remove TahmKench from the game for some time. But hes been my favorite champ since his release, so I play him anyways.
