My Thoughts on Riot's Decision to Remove Other Champions' Select Quotes

Riot took a step forward and, not long after, one backward with the new champion select.

There was absolutely no reason to remove the champion select quotes of others while in Draft pick. The reason for it being too distracting is completely invalid when you consider the various clings, clangs, and other onomatopoeic sounds that busy up the champion select.

I find it extremely unlikely that the other champion selects were the cause of the dodges. It is far more likely the forced lock-in (which you can see people from Bronze V to professionals complaining about), so it's basically people just outright not paying attention.

What would have been better solutions to removing this feature? Basically, two things that Riot does not do: poll the community or add a toggle feature.

We weren't asked if this feature was distracting (and there weren't threads calling for its removal). We didn't get the opportunity. Riot doesn't do things like this. When it comes to gameplay balance and map design, it's completely fair game to let them have a good bit of liberty on those decisions. When it's a quality of life thing like the champion select ambiance, that's something I feel us as players should have a say in.

As for the other alternative, we've come to learn that Riot isn't very good when it comes to toggle-able features. I for the life of me cannot begin to comprehend how in 2016 it would be too difficult to add a toggle for this (especially as there are already toggles for music and SFX).

I'd like to conclude by saying that, while this was a small feature, it was a beloved feature that was unnecessarily removed. As a change like this is supposed to be made in the interest of the community, I don't feel it was. The inclusion of other champion select quotes gave the game a good bit of atmosphere to champion select, and personally I felt it hyped me up for each game. I, very apparently, am not alone in this regard. I'm hoping this is a decision they will come to revert, though Riot doesn't have a solid history of precedence regarding reversions.

I appreciate any comments on this matter, and I'd love to hear from Riot on this.
