What is Ryze's new Basic Splash?

So after looking at Ryze's new splash, and his login animation, I have to ask, what is it depicting? What are those tentacles? Are they metaphorical depictions of darkness attempting to get the crystal in his hand (which I must assume is a fragment of a world rune)? What is the thing on the right, is it his portal? Is the being on the left perhaps vilemaw? Anyone else look at this and wonder what it was? Is it already revealed? :< so many questions little answers :<
