Inspiring Game Designer's Critique of Kai'Sa
This will be a critique of things that I see as positives and negatives of the new champions design. I will be straightforward and say that I don't like a lot about her and most of this will be changes I'd like to see or adaptation for feature champions that may follow this type of design.
Her voice-lines:
- I will agree with most of the threads/posts that I've seen that the voice acting seems very lack luster compared to some of the other champions that have come out recently. I feel like the idea was correct, however the execution wasn't able to capture that feeling that they where looking for. I do get the emotionless tone from it, however being strictly monotone all the time isn't the best. It is very hard to distinguish when the character is angry, scared, excited and so on.
- From the voice lines I've heard, the suit doesn't make any kind of response when Kai'Sa talks to it or at the two of them combined, it would be good for clarity if it made some kind of response to her. Some of her lines, if you take them out of context of her symbiotic relationship and just read them could apply to a lot of other characters." Stick with me and we'll survive", can apply to almost every adc talking to a support, or vice versa.
- She should be very paranoid, jumpy, and distrusting of all others besides herself. I'd say look at some streamers who play horror or tension games by themselves and listen to how they react to small sounds and movements. That's what Kia'Sa should be like. The suit should be the only thing she responds to without a questioning/distrusting tone.
- Carrying off the above point, she should not be thankful at all towards any kind of outside help. As a lone survivalist being isolated for years, everyone's motives should be questioned and immediately perceived as ruses by someone who is capturing the paranoid theme. Anytime she is shielded or healed by someone else, she should ask them what they are after. And if she isn't going to be trusting, then her voice lines should reflect her shrugging off assistance to stay about her lone survivor tactics. " I can shield myself" - when receiving a shield or asking " Why are you helping me?!" in an semi-aggressive tone towards assistance would make her feel like someone who has been isolated and questions the world.
- Certain things about her character should be addressed by voice lines in game, such as how well she is put together( in terms of aesthetic). being skeptical of why other champions have their faces exposed, and very clean could be very interesting dialogue between her and the suit that would build character. But the important thing is that it has to be linked back to some sort of survival tactic or target avoidance. " Why do they walk around without their masks/helmets on?" Kia asks the suit, it responds. " So there is no purpose ... interesting." " I see that their faces are clean when exposed, clean me up we don't want to stand out." Stuff like this which explains why she may so pretty looking would help with her character in my opinion.
- The rest of her voice lines towards other specific characters and creatures are pretty good, just wish some of them had more depth.
Some changes for anatomy and lore correctness:
- When I thought about it, Kia'Sa should not have her helmet off for the for 5-10 minutes of the game. As a human being that has been in the void, a presumably very dark and sunless place. Her eyes would not be adjusted to the sun at all for some time . And this fact is what helps explain some of the additional voice lines stated above, questioning why people walk around without helmets/masks. Having her react to the harsh light of the sun when she spawns in, I think, would make her more believable as a void survivor.
- Also about the sun, the suit should also be affected by it. Going off the voice lines of most void creatures, the sun burns them or is very very unpleasant. However the suit doesn't react, it doesn't hiss with scorch burns when she moves around outside the shadows or bushes. But you could say that sense the other void creatures aren't overly affected by it this is a small optional change.
- Besides these small changes I think the rest of the design is very appealing, a survivalist won't have flashy clothing or bright colors. Every thing will have some use. The suits simplicity is acceptable in my eyes. I'm very fond of the Q projectiles and sounds.
Animations:
- Not going to lie, once it was pointed out to me that Kia uses some of the same animations from other champions or skins it's hard not to notice it every time. This is more of a small problem, but some polish to make the auto animations just a little more unique would go a long way I think.
- The likeness of Kia'Sa's ( this is weird to type with double ') W to Vel'Koz's Q projectile is one of the first things I noticed. I know that she is void, and perhaps they don't have much variation in how things are emitted from their bodies. But it looks just like a smaller Vel'Koz Q that doesn't split. I don't know what kind of change would be done for this without making it too different, perhaps a different color than purple.
- When she procs her E and she get's the holo-pistols. What's the purpose of them, I think she can already shoot projectiles without them. I'm just gonna sum this one up to visual clarity of when her steroids are active. I do believe they are otherwise pretty useless.
- On a positive note, all the upgraded ability animations are very clear. I like when the suits vents open up, I think it looks like it's breathing and that makes me feel like it's more alive.
I would right a section on mechanics and damage, but I'm not going to make any rash comments until I can see and play her myself. Though threw discussion with friends, she may be more powerful as a hybrid assassin type.
