A really late varus post (probably not the kind you're expecting).

I do realize I'm rather late on the topic of the Varus lore re-write (which is what this post is about, surprise!) but please, humor me— I'll try to be quick.

First things first... I don't like it. Now that my stance is out of the way let me try and explain WHY I don't like it.

  1. Real world basis (the one and only point I'm including here).

Parallels between the original Varus lore and the real world can be drawn fairly easily (think military), and the fantasy elements don't hinder that. It's also not focused heavily on Varus's sexuality, sure it's there, but it's not the focus. Readers might have an inkling as to what Varus does or does not do in the bedroom of his home, but the readers aren't GUIDED towards that aspect of him. They're drawn to his character, his beliefs, his traditions, his family, his flaws.

I think the new lore is heavily lacking in this aspect (or at least the comic is). What are the real world parallels? Val and Kai are a gay couple who are very intimate (or lovey dovey, whatever term you prefer), they are accepted by their families (well, at least one of their families that we know of), and no one blinks twice at them being gay. Red flags already.

Being Gay – regardless of whether people believe it to be okay or not – is not a common thing, and the vast majority of the world doesn't look too kindly on homosexuality. Many gay individuals are cruelly mistreated by strangers, ostracized by family members, and even attacked. These are facts, the intensity of such behavior varies from country to country, but there is NO WHERE, where such behavior is absent.

I wouldn't focus on this if it wasn't such a blatantly large portion of the story, but it is. Their sexuality is GLARING. That's not normal. It might be more normal for heterosexual couples (because heterosexual coupling is accepted everywhere), but not for gay couples (especially not for gay couples in certain countries).

So what are real world gay individuals supposed to take from Val and Kai? That they were born into the wrong world? What character traits do Val and Kai have that readers could learn from? Or empathize with? Their circumstances? Why should a reader feel for Val and Kai? All we are given is that they apparently love each other, are loved, and they sleep naked.

None of their close loved ones died when the Noxians invaded. So I don't feel bad for them on that account. When they fuse into Varus, there's some sort of revenge plot there, but it's weak. Val isn't dead anymore, and he can't blame Varus for his death, if anything Val and Kai have Varus to thank (they wouldn't both be alive at the same time if they hadn't fused into Varus's vessel). So really, what am I missing about these guys?

I know Varus is one of the last of his kind, I know his history, the wars he's fought. What he hates, why he hates, what he wants to do, who he wants to find. And Varus's circumstances arise from his decisions, they're not just thrown on him. But what autonomy do Val and Kai even have in this story? I mean I guess they're somehow on an equal level in the battle of wills between themselves and Varus... but really at this point they're more like accessories to Varus.

If Varus/Kai/Val had in-game interactions at all similar to Kayn/Rhaast I would be hard pressed to believe Varus could ever lose the battle of wills...

Just... ugh... The rest of my points are just, "ugh."

Interpret that as you will.

Why are you looking for real world parallels in the lore in the first place? Fantasy is an escapist art, so why hinder it by forcing the narrative to match reality?

"Probably not the kind you're expecting"

I'm expecting for it to criticize his new lore, and talk about the how the removal of his family makes him a weaker character. reads post Yup. I was right.

This might just be one of the most poorly executed posts on Varus’ new lore that I’ve seen. This is more or less a thinly veiled way to express homophobia openly while disguising it as critique on the update. You claim it’s a, “red-flag” for them to just be accepted? This is a fake world where war rages on and heteronormativity takes center stage the vast majority of the time and your focusing on the inconsistencies between this world and theirs? How is their love, which is much less in your face then you may think, any different from Xayah and Rakan’s Love? That of which is literally so blatant that you can’t escape it- even if one is without the other in game. They will always reference one another, and if that’s not, “shoving straightness down my throat” then I honestly don’t know what is. As a gay man, I don’t understand how this is such a big problem amongst the board community. Why is the fact that two of the three beings that make up Varus being gay such a topic of debate? Why is their loving one another such a problem, and why do they have to be a topic of intense discussion. You ask what real world gay people are supposed to pull from this, and as one of those, as you put it, “rare” real world gays, I can tell you what I’ve gathered from the story. The two of these men are hunters, they have fought tooth and nail with one another and have faced adversity in the sense that one of them literally had to make a choice to kill their one true love, or suffer the consequences. I, and this may be shocking, can differentiate their world from ours, as theirs is... fake! It’s all for story and narrative! I don’t think I was, “born in the wrong world” because hey guess what! Their world doesn’t exist! They have character traits, quite a lot actually, that I’m surprised you couldn’t instantly pick up on. They are hard workers, who have fought (literally) to get to a position where they can finally express their love outwardly and openly to family, and move on to the next step in their relationship. They are smart, resilient, and brave. When invaded by the Noxians, they work together to stop the worse from happening. One of them almost perished because he was doing as much as he could to ensure the survival of those that he loved (this is usually what any normal person would empathize with). And then, instead of mercy killing his heart light, he sacrifices him, and himself to keep them together forever! Thus bringing Varus into the picture! Now they are permanently together, fused with one another, and then their new Darkin companion, who is admittedly a weird plot device, but hey! Representation takes on many forms, and for one of the beloved characters of League of Legends to be “kind of gay” is more than the LGBTQ+ community has gotten in a long time in the gaming industry, _ESPECIALLY _ from RIOT. This is a big step and the fact it’s so debated is, frankly, bullshit. Them being gay shouldn’t be a plot device for you to dissect and stew over- it’s just a detail that some people who aren’t used to seeing love of all kinds being represented are too invested in. They’re gay, but that isn’t their most defining feature, and if you’re confused as to what IS, refer to the points above.

Lol asking for homophoba when we have demigods, demons and mages cuz "realism".

Ionia could be Netherlands of Runeterra, homosexuality could be commonly accepted there but no, it is easier to bullshit than thinking on possibilities.

Cultures have their own. I believe Ionia would the most "gay friendly" region of Runeterra. Second would be Noxus but just toward elite people.

I would like to see homosexuality but more on harsh regions like Mt.Targon, Demacia and Bilgewater.

I suspect this thread will be removed if it gets too heated, assuming it isn't already boiling from the start.

That they were born into the wrong world?

Yes, most of the people would love to be born in a world of a videogame... For example, i would like to be in the pokemon world. That is the idea... Videogames are not supposed to be an exact representation of the real world.

Your point?

It makes perfect sense for the Ionians to accept gay people... If we were talking about Noxians or Demacians it would be different.

You see this, Boards? This is how you show an opinion correctly.

Perhaps Val and aka I are just supposed to represent a tragic love story?
