Varus new lore gave me mixed feelings

On one hand i love how they fully fleshed out his character and on the other it feels like they threw away parts of what made varus for what he is. I can see why they did that because hes kind of in the edgy character category along with kayn but his lore is more of that in surpassing zed, while varus focuses more on vengeance. I dont really care about him being gay but since the lore was so well made i can forgive throwing away varus's wife and kid...sort of.
