My thoughts on the recent /Dev Diary: League Comics and Marvel

In all my years of playing League of Legends, this is the first time I’m posting something as I feel this is an important topic for me. Firstly one of the main reasons I still play League is because of its lore, I love discovering more stuff about the universe of League, Runeterra and my favourite champions. That said, I’m concerned/disappointed due to the following reasons:

• Why not use different art styles? I enjoy experiencing stories in different art styles as well as mediums. It keeps things interesting and can change in accordance with the feel/message u want to deliver to the audience.

• I’m glad u found a partner, but please do not aspire to be like them. U have your own style and universe that u have built from the ground up, and u have done a great job so far. I would like to see u keep evolving your own style instead of just copying the way Marvel has done things. I feel Riot’s art, lore and music departments/teams are amazing and do not always get the credit they deserve. So please, do your own thing.

• My main disappointment: Available for free only after 6 months after release??? One of the best feelings is getting home and knowing there is a new story about League waiting to be read. It’s something I look forward to and enjoy up until the moment I finish the new story. Why not shorten the period to two months? Why not make it a week or two? I’m sure u would still make a lot of money irrespective of whether the waiting period is 6 months, one or two months, or one or two weeks. The idea of being left out of the loop for 6 months because I can’t afford to buy new pieces of League lore (I live in a 3rd world country with a weak exchange rate) just because I have to buy something that previously was for free… it really saddens me. So please do not take away or delay one of the best things about League of Legends for people like me; it won’t be nice to be left out of the loop for that amount of time.

This is just my opinion as someone who loves League and its universe.

To ur last point. I think there are other posts which does this better, but here goes.

The goal for riot with the comics are: to be self sustaining (ie pay for themselves); not just a promotion for the game but its own enjoyable product; and for us to be good partner with marvel.

This means we need to pay our overhead (including part of my salary!) and marvel needs to make a profit. Marvel and comicology have standard practices in this sphere for very solid reasons — globally comics are actually a niche industry. So while we are learning: how many of our potential fans are interested in this material; what percentage will buy the trade deluxe edition, if its going to appeal to non-league players etc... etc... We and marvel are moving forward conservatively.

I can assure you: 1. riot will be putting out more free lore and stories than youve seen from us in a looong time, 2. we want all fans to be able to read these and 3 we are already hoping we that the audience base will large enough to will allow us to bring prices or release times down.

BUT this is a new venture for us— and honestly something we’ve seen most other gaming companies fail at.

This first year you will get all the comics for free online before we release any trade paperbacks.

We really, really believe your gonna like these. And we are really, really hoping you and other fans will prosthelytize how much u love them to non-players, non-comic readers etc... so we (and marvel) can continue making these and have more release options the following years.
