Base Kayle armour vs various other Kayle skins' armour

Personally I think that the new base Kayle looks pretty nice, but the problem I with it is it doesn't feel right. It just doesn't suit her and her lore well. Even after the changes, her "armour" still looks very much like a bodysuit and it feels more like a costume to look nice than an actual armour that is at least a little practical while looking decent.

I understand they are trying to make her look less bulky, but making her less armoured by turning her outfit to a bodysuit along with other non-cohesive armour parts is not the way to do it. It is quite possible to wear full armour without looking bulky or tanky. Even if you don't make her wear full armour, there are other styles of armour that can make her look a lot more sensible and realistic while still looking gorgeous and divine and celestial, which funnily enough they actually are able to do it on their other skins.

We will now examine Kayle's other skin and see how their armour designs could actually work on base Kayle:

Transcended Kayle: If they won't bother changing anything they might as well just replace the base skin with this instead. Even though the armour level is clearly low, she looks cohesive and practical and matches her base theme very well and best out of all other skins (which makes sense as they are skins). It gives you a feel of "Kayle wears light armour, probably because of lighter weight and more mobility for her fighting style" instead of "Kayle wears stupidly light armour just for the sake of light armour", or "Kayle wears a set of impractical and ridiculously designed armour that are meant to be armour but also looks less heavy just because we want it to not look heavy" which is the current version.

Like seriously, if you want her to have light armour or less armour, give her practical light armour or make her wear less armour but she can wear something else that's sensible but NOT a BODYSUIT that PRETENDS to be armour. This skin just shows you how great of a job you did and you still messed up in the base skin.

Silver Kayle: She is not wearing full plate armour, and her thighs are still shown like in bodysuit, but other parts a mostly covered in practical and sensible armour most notably her arms, shoulder and legs (which the base Kayle actually have them look bulkier and less practical even though they said they want her to look less armoured) and her chest is one piece of "thing" which to me looks like a sort of dress-plate hybrid armour.

Overall her armour does not look exaggerated and large and bulky, and it isn't full plate armour as well, but the overall feel it gives it very cohesive and practical. Obviously you know it isn't the best protection but it looks like decent armour and it looks very beautiful too and the theme it gives suits her lore (and her skin theme) very well. If the base Kayle had an armour design similar to Silver Kayle but with the colour scheme different, I think a lot of people won't have any problem and in fact will like it very much.

Judgement Kayle: She is wearing almost full armour, but personally speaking I really don't feel she looks heavily armoured and bulky. The whole design is very cohesive and practical, while it still has decorative elements like the curly spikes but they are more ornamented outwards like horns, instead of emphasizing curviness in the base Kayle armour especially her body shape is shown with the bodysuit.

You can clearly see parts of her body such as her elbow and thighs are not entirely covered by armour, as she wears parts of armour like a vambrace and her plate legs don't cover up fully so it feels more like partial plate armour (that are not heavy too) than Garen like armour.

Anyway I am starting to get repetitive as I mean the idea of all the skins are very similar, they all have much more sensible armour that isn't bulky but also looks nice and matches the theme and a lot more practical.

Battleborn Kayle: She is wearing some plate and some leather armour with parts of it decorate by fur. Again this set of armour looks very cohesive and practical, while it isn't giving you the feel of bulkiness and she's tanky, and it also looks very nice in my opinion (Although I would say that I dislike the change as she used to be full plate armour with the skin so Riot is changing the core design of a skin that a previous customer spent money to bought but now it got changed to something they didn't originally wanted).

Her vambraces and boots are leather, while her shoulder armour and thigh armour are metal, and her breastplate is metal but her lower body is leather. This armour design feels very practical but obviously with that many leather components you can immediately say she doesn't look bulky and tank. Mind you Riot only said they want her to look "less armoured" not "low armoured". While I don't think this design with leather would work on base Kayle, it is a good example of how practical and sensible armour and realistic armour can look nice while even wearing a whole body of it won't makes people think she's heavily armoured or tanky.

Viridian Kayle: This is one of the least armoured skins (Excluding the robotic and Pentakill ones) but even this armour could work better on base Kayle then the one now. Yes her whole body has nearly no armour, but other parts of her body are armoured in a sensible way while again there are enough decoration to make them look nice. The body part looks more like clothing than actual armour although evolving it gives a breastplate, but somehow it still matches very well and looks nice and practical and armoured well but not tanky and bulky.

For the skin itself it definitely gives you the feel of elves which is also often associated with more magical and divinity properties hence why the armour would also work on base Kayle. It is like the armour only offers some protection in favour for light weight and mobility. But the base skin doesn't give that same feel even though the armour level is about the same.

Iron Inquisitor Kayle: The idea is similar to Judgement Kayle. She clearly has nearly full armour but again it looks very cohesive and pratical but also looks very nice at the same time. It matches the skin theme perfectly too. Although she still doesn't look bulky, I will say that this skin does look more heavy than judgment Kayle, so if Riot wanted a less armoured Kayle they could use a modified Iron Inquisitor Kayle for the base design. Like maybe the level of armour of Judgement and Silver Kayle but the design theme of Iron Inquisitor would give a look that is closer to old Kayle but also achieving what Riot wanted.

Conclusion: Basically my points are these:

  • Making her with less armour or lighter armour isn't wrong, she doesn't need to wear full plate armour just because she used to.
  • Replacing armour with bodysuit and ornamenting armour in "funny" ways doesn't make the skin look nice. This is because we know the aim of her outfit is protection not a fashion show, which means even if it looks "beautiful", it will be immersion breaking and make people feel it looks bad.
  • Riot actually done amazing job on basically all her other skins' armour. Making them not feeling heavy, while it still looks practical and beautiful at the same time and matches the theme of the skin.
  • Multiple skins gives multiple example of the different directions of how Riot could've changed Kayle's armour to achieve their aim of making her look not bulky and lighter armoured than before.

Yea I agree with you, I think the look is pretty nice but it just isn't quite right. Some of the fan designs add more of the chest armor and the cloth bit extension like her current design that just look better to me. At the moment it just feels like the torso is too empty.

Careful you don't want to make to nuanced a point here. People might get confused

it's just very random, both practically and visually, to have only her lower torso exposed. it's like they just didn't know how to create a full suit of armour, so they made gloves and boots, and painted the rest purple lol.

I think all her skins except silver, riot, and aether all look very nice, the only reason I dont those three because it look bad, riot kayle and aether look like a down grade and silver looks lazy...
