The whole story behind the project skins. (theory)

So to begin the story is first let's begin with YiMasterYi . In the beginning of the overdrive video (click the link if you haven't seen it yet) we see Yi getting visions of his past memories. What I believe is that his body has already died for more than a long time now.The thing is, the one that killed him was none other then that shadowy figure. Think about it, it's the only sort of memory we see from Yi during the whole video, so it should've been the last moments of his life when he was defeated by whoever it was. The reasoning behind this is that all of the project characters (or skins whatever you'd like to call them) are robots/cyborgs except for Leona (go to 3rd paragraph if you'd like to know about why i think that). Including Fiora who looks human, but under closer inspection she's more or less a robot. So basically Yi's memory/brain has been trapped of him reliving his past memories because of the scientist in the video has put him under a state of Limbo. When Yi awakens, he doesn't know what happens, so he panics in an effort to escape. When Fiora had appeared and given him the blade, he had a vision of his memory, which what looked like what happened when he had been defeated.

As soon as they had escaped, they encountered Zed. (this next part will be some important information for this to make sense) Yi was the keeper of the memories of all 4 project characters as seen in the project promotion, so he had inherited their memories. Fiora and Lucian knew that the memories were with Yi, so they decided to help him escape and so that were able to regain their past life. Zed, however, was helping them escape, but never knew about Yi being the keeper of the memories, decided to help. When Yi had come through the exit, Zed sensed his memory inside of Yi. Instead of being calm, he went paranoid, he went into a fury to reclaim what was his. To back this up, Lucian who was outside, was guarding with Zed to make sure that the rescue mission was completed. That was why he wasn't surprised of the sudden emergence of Zed.

Switching around a bit, you might be wondering "Well where's LeonaLeona and YasuoYasuo in all of this. Starting with Yasuo, he had already escaped, if you look at his splash art for his project skin you can see that behind is slashed pillars and wires hanging, which can back the evidence that he had escaped. Leona on the other hand had not been constructed yet, because of her shield being on a stand in the video. The way that Project came to be in a lore sense, was that she had fought a fierce battle which where she was defeated, the scientist somehow got a hold of the body, and healed it of its wounds and sealed her in a capsule. During Yi's panic of power, he might have released Leona from her capsule, but she did not emerge immediately due to her being sealed for so long. When she does awake, she learned how to operate the machine and arm herself with the sword and shield. This is why she has a human mouth in her splash art. The same goes for Yasuo except he had somehow woken a lot earlier.

Thats the end! Please ask if you'd like a part 2 of my analysis in this whole project lore and feel free to ask any questions to me and I'll be glad to answer.

I don't think they died. They just lost there humanity. Yi was the newest one, or final one to probable be injected. He is slowly losing his soul to the PROJECT since that is what the syerum does. Makes you an unstable force, with a price. (Below is a quote from the rioter post on PROJECT skin line)

"Artists decided to keep PROJECT skins people-sized, though the champions have fused and augmented their bodies using some big, crazy technology. “In order to become PROJECT you have to surrender your humanity," says Lisa “Saiyaka” Thorn, a visual designer. "The technology takes over your soul."

PROJECT champs aren't just soulless husks, though. Little clues point to their human origin: Yasuo's leather glove, Leona's exposed jaw, Master Yi's wuju-sculpted washboard abs. These aren’t robots—they’re just seriously tricked out people."

i dont agree with the leona part tbh, i feel it was just tacked on at the end so that they made a full team. idk just my thoughts.

(This is like an old post, but I want to post this now to get this out of my head.) I have two theories about that shadow Yi sees: 1. Yi's father, but probably not. Could be his father who was training him, implementing wuju style into him. Must've been a strict father. And now yi is remembering how his father was training him to be his successor. Now, this sounds all weird, and apologize if I don't make sense. 2. Yi's inner self, but in a different form. Similar to the father theory, but more of a fighting spirit within Yi. That shadow must be the voice that echos in Yi's mind. Since he was put into the PROJECT initiation, his mind is not his own, and that shadow is trying to make him remember who he is. Yi even says it in his quotes in the PROJECT Skin: "The voice of a stranger... echoes in my mind.", "Memories... like shadows in the fog." And then there's this quote: "Some lives persist in error." His true self still lives on, but only in the errors of his system, and that shadow is his true self reaching out to him; to make him remember. That why near the end of the fighting, when Yi started to glow, his true self was awakening, but only for a moment. Another thing to note is that Yi most likely converts back to his old self when uses his ultimate in-game(voice changes from robot to echo). But then, it only lasts for a few seconds, just like in the video. The only way for him to remember who he was, is to fight. In battle, his body remembers the feeling of being alive, or in other terms, being human. And soon, his mind will remember that feeling too. (These theories are based off of the many fighting animes that I have seen. They always have that inner spirit or something, telling them to fight on; to struggle; to survive. Or even try to make them turn back to normal.)

Yasuo is human too, you can see it when he removes his face cover to play the flute.
