Trueshot

Ezreal is my favorite character in league of legends. I choose to play him out of 141 other champions because he is cocky, adventurous, and naïve all at once. The changes to him are not in anyway “wrong”. But I have a love of his current personality and loathe to see him turn into _just another asshole in the League of Legends._

Ezreal struggled to deal with abandonment. Not once has his lore mentioned any close friends. Nor did he seem particularly close to his uncle, who kept him contained and locked down in studies and lectures. His pranks and mischief are likely just a want for attention that he didn’t get having been left behind. Perhaps even more so, they were a way to channel his want for adrenaline and fun.

And what fun he had. His lore speaks to his enjoyment of the pranks and mischief he caused. But never shows him to be malicious. He always just wanted to have fun and play around. Relishing in what little adventure he could get. He didn’t want anyone to get hurt, and he didn’t see anyone as ‘beneath him’. He just wanted to see how his parents felt when they were running from danger.. and consequences.

Ezreal was a “curious child”. Yet he didn’t want to learn information that someone else already knew. Rather he wanted to learn things that nobody else did. To find and discover mystical artifacts that had long since been forgotten. He is naive in that he doesn’t care about politics or power struggles. He just wants to live in a world in which he is free to see the unknown.

Ezreal is my favourite character in League of Legends. He is cocky and naive, and Riot has every single right to change their characters however they like. But I love Ezreal’s character because despite how lonely he is, or how abandoned he must feel. He is still able to innocently enjoy his adventures. For the glory, and the fame. But more than any of that attention he just wants “to answer his true calling: adventure”. So while I would love to see him keep his cockiness, as an Ezreal main and someone who loves his lore. I would **love** to see him retain his childish sense of adventure.

Upvotes are much appreciated as they give the opportunity for this discussion to be seen.

Notes

I currently have little access to information on the Ezreal changes. I cannot see the majority of his quotes and am unable to reflect on his future lore. Therefore I recognize that I may just be massively overthinking this and will reserve my “judgements” of his update for the future.

I'm conflicted, he is absolutely overcompensating. However his joking nature and playful cockiness still seem to be there. He just feels, off kilter. Like something isn't quite right with the way he presents himself.

Ez is my favourite too for many of the same reasons. I'm not a huge fan of him becoming a jerk, but I can see where that is naturally how he would end up given his backstory and where there is room for Riot to grow the character should they choose to. We'll see how his VO turns out (not promising from the few lines we've heard), but he may still have some sense of adventure.

I think given the direction most champs have been going, this is probably the best we could've hoped for and at least visually he's remained true to who he is for the most part along with his kit.

With all lore changes that have happened, I've developed a bit of my own lore of the universe where I take the bits I like and rewrite the bits I don't like. We are never going to fully agree with all the lore choices, but we can always make the characters in our minds who we want them to be. Whereas some see Ez as a jerk who doesn't care that he loosed a bunch of fire monsters on Piltover, it can also be seen as a "whoopsy" that he's now cleaning up because he still has a childlike mentality of adventure without assessing the consequences.

... Because Ezreal always has been an asshole? I haven't read his old lore, but AFAIK, Ezreal having feelings of abandonement and hunting glory SO THAT HIS PARENTS MAY KNOW WHERE HE IS is new, and differs from the narcissistic jerk we had before. He acts the same, but now he has a legitimate reason to be this way.

Kids love edgy a-holes. No need to look further for explanations.

Ezreal always came across to me as arrogant ( who needs a map). I feel we all looked past it due to his being a teenager

My personal opinion, maybe its just from being used to old ezreal, but I find Ezreal's new voice and lines a bit jarring by comparison to the older.

Look if anyone tells you that a person or company shouldn't be criticized because they have the right to do what they want, those people who say crap like that should frankly shut up because I in fact do have the right to express my opinion on here same as anyone else so I don't think you should ever have to explain to people who honestly think like that it and I absolutely don't think that it should require them to not have the right to do what they're doing before it can 'criticized'.

For lore, I had taken the (I think wrong) assumption that we'd have a character's narrative arch see some semblance of progress, like figuratively speaking a 'Chapter 2'. Yet as much as this new lore is obviously a follow up to the last Ezreal story, it certainly hasn't shared anything new or juicy revelations about Ezreal that hadn't been sufficiently established already!

As well as that, im under the impression that "Elixir of Uloa" is now a watered down version of this new story. As both pieces of lore present a very similar function. Could just be me thinking this, but I feel like we've essentially been told the same story twice.

I don't know if there are more stories coming or not. If there are then I will probably change my judgment of Ezreal's LU event. But for time being and this would still be a subjective opinion, Ezreal hasn't exactly escalated to any new found heights as a more compelling character. This had nothing to do with his personality either, but I'm not finding myself too interested in seeing where he goes next. (Being a bit harsh now really)

Also, I have very personal dissatisfaction with the glove's redesign. It doesn't convey the visual language of an incredibly old artifact to me, instead it looks like an apparatus more likely constructed in modern-day Piltover.

Lore/character/look/VO and gameplay are all crucial factor when it comes to playing (and even more maining) a character for me.

Immersion and identification are important aspect of anything that has some sort of RPG factor in it.

Edit: Ezreal used to be a cocky little final fantasy kid/teen who just went on looking cool. Reworked Ezreal keeps a cocky attitude but you can easily see that most of the times he is scared af and is well aware that most of his exploits are merit of his weapon and that his merit is just going on.
