Was anyone else disappointed with the new champs rakan and xayah's backstory?
I like their kits and what they add to the game but In my opinion their contribution to the lore was pretty shit :(

Yeah I was a bit disappointed by it,mainly because I hoped for something else than the typical "humans opress the other race"-thing. Not to mention that Rakans story doesn't have much to it except for him being in love with Xayah.
However in the end, this is just the groundwork for the lore that is eventually going to follow and I see quite some potential in it.(for example Xayah seems a bit more extreme than Rakan, which could lead to a conflict between the 2 or even with other Vastaya) and I do like the way Xayah and Rakan interact with each other.
And I think the addition of Vastaya is pretty great,it gives us a more solid background for some animal-hybrids and it allows for more variety in the champion pool
I was. The major human-vastaya conflict is based on the crimes of Zed and some sacred pact involving the Kinkou. Which we, the readers, know nothing about. I think the writers needed to take some more time to flesh out what Ionia is really like before introducing such a radical new element. But, on the bright-side, I think Xayah's and Rakan's lore will be retrospectively good once we know more about Zed and Ionia.
In short, the introduction of the Vastaya at this time is more confusing than interesting.
Establishes the basis for Vastaya, something that connects the majority of the animal/people hybrid things in Runeterra, elaborates on the activities of the Order of Shadows, more knowledge is gained about Ahri, Wukong, Nami, and Rengar, as well as adding more nuance to the region of Ionia.
Yes it felt more like Ionia Vastaya story rather than Rakan and Xayah story. We know about Xayah a bit in that her buddies are missing but aside from that not much. Good stories, bad biographies.
When I read the backstory, I feel as though who they are is based on the other person. Backstories tell us who the champion is and their history. What matters most to them when it comes to who they are now is each other, so their bios reflect that. For example, people wanted to know where Kat was in Garen's backstory. Kat does not play a part in who Garen is as a champion. She could be a story element, but she isn't a major factor in his current character.
Things are different for Xayah and Rakan as they are both madly in love with each other and they're intertwined. So much so that if Rakan did not exist, Xayah's back story would be more serious and dark because he's not involved. Rakan's backstory would be light hearted as he would still be out travelling by himself, alone. They were a strong enough influence on each other to where the person they are now would not be present if the other didn't exist.
I mean, Wukong's story has Yi as a major figure in it. Without Yi, Kong would still be out searching for his call. No other development for him would have happened yet.
